Transcript
Xhafer:

Hello, and welcome to who are you?

Xhafer:

A Babylon five watch cast hosted by two friends who have gotten to know each

Xhafer:

other and will continue to get to know each other while rewatching a classic

Xhafer:

show from the childhood Babylon five

Xhafer:

Fair.

Laura:

And I'm Laura.

Xhafer:

And today, Laura, I get to ask you.

Xhafer:

Who are you?

Laura:

Well, Uh, when we talk about who we are.

Laura:

Sometimes I don't really think about.

Laura:

The things I've been in the past, you know, Cause they're

Laura:

not like currently active.

Xhafer:

That's fair.

Laura:

And so I kind of discount that, but lately.

Laura:

A couple of weeks ago, something got me thinking about who I was when I was little

Laura:

Laura, you know, and little Laura became big Laura, so that's valid there too.

Laura:

Two valid people.

Laura:

And little Laura was, you know, every kid has something that they're super into.

Laura:

Right.

Laura:

So.

Laura:

Little Laura was into reptiles.

Laura:

Right.

Laura:

Yeah,

Laura:

I was the reptile kid.

Laura:

Not weird at all.

Xhafer:

Now I have to ask initially, just, just off the bat.

Xhafer:

Um, knowing that we were of, I think I was eight when drastic park came out.

Xhafer:

It was this, this is heavily influencing this, this, uh, turn in you as a child.

Laura:

Well, so I was like a dinosaur kid before Jurassic park.

Laura:

And then Jurassic park came out and I was kind of scared of that movie.

Laura:

I was.

Laura:

Aye.

Laura:

I was the kid that got really immersed in the movie.

Laura:

And so those things scared me.

Laura:

And so like, The dinosaur thing I kind of gave up on and switched to reptiles

Laura:

because there weren't any like super scary movies yet about reptiles.

Laura:

There were a lot of B movies.

Laura:

I'm sure.

Laura:

But, but little Laura, wasn't watching those.

Laura:

But.

Laura:

Little Laura, especially loved turtles.

Laura:

Turtles were her thing.

Xhafer:

Did You have a favorite turtle?

Laura:

Oh, yes.

Xhafer:

What was your favorite

Laura:

I mean sea turtles.

Laura:

As a group would probably be my favorite, the green sea turtle.

Xhafer:

Okay.

Laura:

Leatherback sea turtle.

Laura:

You know, that's the biggest one.

Laura:

I have a lot of those little facts still left in my brain about

Laura:

turtles and reptiles and stuff.

Laura:

And I.

Laura:

Thought just everybody knew.

Laura:

This much stuff about reptiles, but I'm constantly like.

Laura:

Being reminded lately that.

Laura:

Not everybody does.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

I, I feel like I know very little about reptiles.

Xhafer:

Um, I know enough to avoid them in the desert.

Xhafer:

And that's, that's the extent of my knowledge.

Xhafer:

Oh, it's something that's living in the desert.

Xhafer:

It's probably not good for me.

Xhafer:

I'm just going to stay away from it.

Xhafer:

That's just kinda my general rule of all creatures, all bugs.

Xhafer:

And I thought I've spent a lot of time in the desert.

Xhafer:

I've I've done some hiking.

Xhafer:

Um,

Laura:

that's probably when you really want to stay away from them

Laura:

in the desert is when you're hiking.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

I almost feel a little bit cheated that we spend all that time in New Mexico.

Laura:

And I didn't see a single rattlesnake.

Laura:

my husband told me that when he was a child too, about Owen's

Laura:

age, they moved to Oklahoma.

Laura:

Right.

Laura:

And he was terrified.

Laura:

Did not want to move to Oklahoma because he thought he was going to.

Laura:

See, so many rattlesnakes and get bit by a rattlesnake.

Laura:

Uh, the man has lived 30 years in Oklahoma.

Laura:

Never seen a rattlesnake.

Laura:

Even though we have about, I think there's six or seven different

Laura:

types here in, in Oklahoma.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

We get like the, the Eastern brands of rattlesnake that are on the

Laura:

Eastern side of the United States.

Laura:

We get the Western ones, we get the Western diamond back and all

Laura:

the, you know, good deserty ones.

Laura:

And then we have a couple of our own.

Xhafer:

Oh, nice.

Xhafer:

Nothing I've ever had to worry about up here in Michigan..

Xhafer:

Almost everything that can survive.

Xhafer:

Our winter is not poisonous.

Xhafer:

So.

Laura:

Wow.

Laura:

You don't

Xhafer:

really got much of a concern.

Laura:

do you get

Xhafer:

Uh, I've.

Xhafer:

I there's.

Xhafer:

Everyone has a story of like their friends, cousins, uncle.

Xhafer:

College roommate.

Xhafer:

saw a rattlesnake once, but.

Xhafer:

No, no one.

Xhafer:

I actually know.

Xhafer:

I believe.

Xhafer:

Uh, and I know someone will listen to this and come forward afterwards.

Xhafer:

I'm sure.

Xhafer:

Um, I'll hear a story tomorrow, even before this episode is released.

Xhafer:

has actually, in-person seen a rattlesnake in the state.

Xhafer:

My dad encountered one.

Xhafer:

In the Dakotas once.

Laura:

Okay.

Laura:

I could see that.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

He was out there, pheasant hunting.

Xhafer:

And so we had a shotgun.

Xhafer:

So when the rattler started making noise, he just shot it just like

Xhafer:

instinctively, just shot it immediately.

Laura:

That's

Laura:

crazy.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

He brought home the rattler.

Laura:

Well, that's kind of cool.

Laura:

Those are

Xhafer:

I think it's.

Xhafer:

In a box in my garage right now, along with all of his various hunting trophies.

Laura:

Well, if you're looking for like some cheap entertainment, I say, join

Laura:

the Oklahoma snake identification page.

Laura:

they are like a bunch of snake, reptile nerds.

Laura:

Who have this page for you to, if you're in the.

Laura:

You know, out in the sticks and oh no, there's a snake.

Laura:

You take a picture, you can send it to them.

Laura:

They'll tell you exactly what it is within minutes.

Xhafer:

is.

Xhafer:

this something you do in your free time?

Laura:

I love to, I love to browse this thing.

Laura:

Because.

Laura:

Uh, there's a lot of people misidentifying and, and like everything is a copperhead

Laura:

to some people it's not You know, And you learn a lot, you learn a lot

Laura:

about snakes and you know, there's a chance that wherever you are, if

Laura:

you're in the United States, that is.

Laura:

That you might have a snake that ranges in our state.

Laura:

And you can learn more about them or see more.

Laura:

About, like what they look like in their various forms.

Laura:

Because some of these snakes, when they're babies.

Laura:

They look way different.

Laura:

Than the grownups.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

I mean, they molt.

Xhafer:

That makes sense.

Xhafer:

I guess.

Xhafer:

For, I say, knowing that I know nothing about snakes or reptiles

Xhafer:

in general, that makes sense.

Xhafer:

Butterflies and caterpillar.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

It all checks out.

Laura:

It is a hoot.

Laura:

I love to follow it.

Laura:

And.

Laura:

You know, turtles were my thing, but I feel like I'm learning

Laura:

more about snakes and, and.

Laura:

Fi being less scared of them.

Laura:

Like when I was a kid.

Laura:

And I.

Laura:

Uh, worked for the.

Laura:

State parks department.

Laura:

I was a volunteer.

Laura:

And they had some snakes, so we could hold.

Laura:

And show them to people.

Laura:

A speckled king snake and an Eastern hognose snake.

Laura:

I was pretty chill with snakes, but as I got older, I don't

Laura:

know what happened to me.

Laura:

I got kind of like, really scared of snakes.

Laura:

So I'm trying to like exposure therapy myself, back into a

Laura:

little bit of reptile nerd.

Laura:

So get less scared.

Xhafer:

I don't know if I'm afraid of snakes.

Xhafer:

There's like, There's two types of fear, right?

Xhafer:

This is a conversation.

Xhafer:

I've had a number of times that this is a, I guess, a theory that, My

Xhafer:

friend, Chris, from draft the universe.

Xhafer:

And I have posited before which is, there's two types of fear.

Xhafer:

There's the fear of cowardice and the fear of respect.

Laura:

Hmm.

Laura:

Okay.

Xhafer:

and the fear I have of snakes.

Xhafer:

And most things that can be poisonous is definitely the fear of respect.

Laura:

Right.

Xhafer:

It's you know, like my table saw.

Xhafer:

Um, you know what I'm doing woodworking I'm afraid of my

Xhafer:

table saw it's terrifying.

Xhafer:

It's a

Xhafer:

giant blade.

Xhafer:

Yeah, it's, it's a show, very sharp metal things spinning very, very fast.

Xhafer:

And if something goes wrong with it, if I'm lucky, I'll lose a finger.

Xhafer:

Like, that's not even close to the worst thing that could happen using a table saw.

Xhafer:

You know, So, you know, so it's like that, that kind of respect the fear of

Xhafer:

respect, you know, like I am aware that you are dangerous and so I will pay

Xhafer:

you the respect that you're due for it.

Xhafer:

As opposed to the fear of cowardice where it's just like snakes.

Xhafer:

Nope.

Xhafer:

I don't touch snakes, you know, it's like, you know, it's, there's, it's different.

Laura:

Yeah, I think that it's very instinctual that.

Laura:

, when you're a child, you don't fear as many things.

Laura:

And then I developed like this instinctual and it's like, well, maybe if I know more

Laura:

about it, Then I won't feel as afraid.

Laura:

I can still feel that respect.

Laura:

I can still.

Laura:

keep a healthy space of distance between me and any wild snake that I see.

Laura:

But I won't be like heart-pounding freaking out because there's a snake.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

I mean, it's all about having that knowledge.

Xhafer:

You know that knowledge of that snake or that knowledge of another's

Xhafer:

culture, much like this episode

Xhafer:

of Babylon five.

Laura:

knew.

Laura:

you could do it.

Xhafer:

Ah, oh, it's got to get there.

Xhafer:

Anyways.

Xhafer:

so we've got season two episode 12, acts of sacrifice.

Xhafer:

which is a very apt title

Xhafer:

because both the, a storyline and the B storyline do involve a act of sacrifice.

Laura:

Hmm, I hate this.

Laura:

I hate this double meaning.

Laura:

I mean, I think I hate it in the same way that Jeff fare.

Laura:

I hated.

Laura:

grow pose in some ways.

Xhafer:

Yeah, that's fair.

Laura:

All right.

Laura:

So we open up on a non Centauri skirmish.

Laura:

cruisers trying to get some civilian ships out of the area, but it's not going well.

Xhafer:

Yeah, the heavy cruiser totally takes the hit for the school bus.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

It

Xhafer:

Has it flies through the warp gate.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

So this is the first of several acts of sacrifice we're

Laura:

going to get in this episode.

Laura:

We, we have a nice transition out of this.

Laura:

You know, the, the command ship, deciding to place themselves in

Laura:

the line of fire and get exploded.

Laura:

to Dzhokhar and he's playing this video.

Laura:

Four.

Laura:

The Babylon five command staff.

Xhafer:

Yeah, he's outraged over the unprovoked attack on a civilian target.

Xhafer:

Sheridan says he'll talk to earth gov about it.

Xhafer:

Dzhokhar's convinced if earth intervenes, the rest of the galaxy will follow.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Apparently Londa was also invited to this talk and he decided not to

Laura:

come and sent a statement saying, you know, the, the thing that you

Laura:

would always say in this situation,

Xhafer:

Yeah, they totally had weapons of mass destruction.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

The civilians were a shield for military targets.

Laura:

Sheridan seems to believe what Dzhokhar's saying.

Laura:

And does promise to assist.

Laura:

I like the quote that he gives us here about the first

Laura:

casualty of war is the truth.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

That's true.

Xhafer:

Sure is.

Laura:

so I get to, uh, apologize to you.

Laura:

Jafar several episodes back.

Laura:

There was a species that was mentioned in.

Laura:

share it and talking about the species that he had seen, and

Laura:

he tells us this glorious, like.

Laura:

you know, they were.

Laura:

Beautiful.

Laura:

And the ship was amazing and it was just like his first contact experience.

Laura:

We saw nothing of them.

Laura:

I, I said that we were going to see them later.

Laura:

Cause I did, I Googled the name of that race, which is escaping me at this moment.

Laura:

And when I Googled the name of that race.

Laura:

These guys came up.

Laura:

And so I assumed they were the same race.

Laura:

but we're not going to get that race this year.

Laura:

It had mentioned.

Laura:

Several episodes back late later.

Laura:

Uh, we just get these guys.

Xhafer:

Well, BU.

Xhafer:

Um, we get the Lumosity.

Xhafer:

They're coming to the station.

Xhafer:

they're technologically advanced, but they don't interact with

Xhafer:

any of the other species really.

Xhafer:

And so it's very important for earth to establish diplomatic relations with them.

Xhafer:

given the current state of the galaxy and all of the unknown

Xhafer:

pressures of everything.

Xhafer:

We need these guys in our back pocket.

Xhafer:

We need to make more friends.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

He delegates dealing with the Lumosity to Ivanova.

Laura:

And I laughed because he tells her to get them to sign on to the

Laura:

Alliance by any means necessary.

Xhafer:

Yeah, whatever you have to do, that is not ominous at all.

Xhafer:

Not like this ominous episode title.

Xhafer:

we come, we go to theme and when we get back, Dylan in Jakarta or going

Xhafer:

over the same footage, uh, Shakara was going over with the command staff.

Xhafer:

Dylan brings up a valid point here.

Xhafer:

the Nard have made clear that they too desire war.

Xhafer:

It's, it's not that they don't want this war that they're losing so badly.

Laura:

Right.

Xhafer:

Right.

Laura:

She throws some of Dzhokhar's words back in his face saying you

Laura:

want.

Laura:

You said you would destroy them.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

She really heavily implies here that if they

Xhafer:

intervene on behalf of the non.

Xhafer:

And by weakening the centaury military.

Xhafer:

They would be complicit in the genocide of the centaury, the Nardo

Xhafer:

Blakely to commit a few years after.

Laura:

Yeah, she says If we help you now, this entire you're just going

Laura:

to need more help in a few years.

Laura:

So.

Laura:

I mean, I.

Laura:

I take her point.

Laura:

I understand it.

Xhafer:

she tells Chicago, her people are tired of war.

Xhafer:

Chikara insist that diplomacy is not an option.

Xhafer:

And we cut to Zach Allen breaking up a bar fight, before it gets

Xhafer:

started between some centaurian Nara.

Xhafer:

And it's a real quick cut, but it is important for later.

Laura:

you know, I'm wondering about the episode order.

Laura:

If this episode aired.

Laura:

When it did.

Laura:

I know we talk about episode order a lot, but she said that thing

Laura:

about her people are tired of war.

Laura:

Uh, it didn't in the previous episode, we just put a fourth.

Laura:

Warrior cast person on the

Xhafer:

Oh, yeah, her people are not tired of war.

Xhafer:

Her people are ready for war right now.

Xhafer:

Dylann is tired of war on their behalf.

Laura:

I wonder, you know, if, if this was in a different spot, it would, that

Laura:

statement would make the most sense.

Laura:

cause she doesn't yet know that.

Laura:

The gray council itself is like preparing for war.

Xhafer:

Well, the episode order has matched the episode order in my

Xhafer:

Seasoned guide books that I have.

Xhafer:

And those were published during the fifth season of Babylon five.

Xhafer:

So.

Xhafer:

I got to imagine whatever episode order we're in right now.

Xhafer:

It is not as wonky as season one was.

Laura:

Okay.

Xhafer:

And then we cut away from that to the Lottie.

Xhafer:

Arriving at the station and we get to meet our two guest stars of this episode.

Laura:

yeah.

Xhafer:

We get Ian Abercrombie.

Xhafer:

Is the ambassador.

Xhafer:

he is the first of three Alfred's we get in Babylon five.

Laura:

Oh, really?

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

none of the super famous ones, but almost all of the animated ones have roles.

Laura:

Oh, how fun.

Xhafer:

And, this is the first.

Xhafer:

And it is a he's Alford in the birds of prey.

Xhafer:

Live action show.

Laura:

Oh,

Xhafer:

And then we get, Paul Williams is talk.

Xhafer:

Which is crazy to me because I had no idea under that loaf.

Xhafer:

And then I, his voice sounded familiar to me.

Xhafer:

And I'm just all, like, I know that voice, but who is that?

Xhafer:

And it's Paul Williams.

Xhafer:

of course being the Oscar and Emmy award winning singer songwriter.

Xhafer:

Uh, he's worked with Sinatra.

Xhafer:

He wrote a bunch of the music for a star is born.

Xhafer:

The original was Streisand, a three dog night.

Xhafer:

Uh, he worked.

Xhafer:

A ton on random access memories with daft punk.

Xhafer:

Like he is all over the place.

Laura:

He has an excellent air in this whole episode, just the way he speaks.

Laura:

And, and he is a great narrator voice.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Talk, talk, talk.

Laura:

Uh,

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

And let his character name is his function.

Xhafer:

I don't know if that was like a JMS joke.

Xhafer:

like dag ear.

Xhafer:

Okay.

Xhafer:

With the little windows, wives, or if it's like, actually just so simple.

Xhafer:

That it's just how their culture handles things.

Xhafer:

Like everyone in that position is named talk because they talk.

Laura:

Fantastic.

Xhafer:

Anyways talk speaks for the ambassador.

Xhafer:

So he doesn't have to lower himself by speaking to a lesser species.

Xhafer:

And if he determines that humanity is worth their time,

Xhafer:

then he'll actually talk to them.

Laura:

It is just horrific that no one warned Ivanova about this.

Laura:

I mean, somebody had to know, right.

Laura:

Somebody already knew that this is how we handle.

Laura:

Other species we've talked to them in some way.

Laura:

But Ivana.

Laura:

Hannah is very graceful sheets.

Laura:

She takes this as well as one can.

Xhafer:

After this, we cut to Londo who just hates the fame.

Xhafer:

He's just sick of being famous already.

Laura:

He's got a, a C here, fan sucking up to him and his quarters.

Laura:

Looking for political favors.

Laura:

He wants Londo to.

Laura:

Well, he offers Londo some contraband, including the Shaquan.

Laura:

Kwan ETH plant.

Laura:

Aye.

Laura:

I thought that was a nice touch.

Laura:

to get Llanos good word and the right years, And he says he'll

Laura:

make some discreet inquiries, but he also has a headache.

Xhafer:

let's get out of here.

Xhafer:

I'm tired of everyone's sucking up to me.

Laura:

Sure.

Laura:

Go ahead.

Laura:

Londo.

Xhafer:

He's really Lamenting all the power that he's built

Xhafer:

in gathered for himself.

Xhafer:

Just he weight.

Laura:

we cut to a brawl in the hallway.

Laura:

We've got Those Centauri that were instigating a bar

Laura:

fight back in the casino.

Laura:

hurling insults at Narins are now trying to beat them with lead pipes.

Laura:

Zach shows up again to break it . Up.

Laura:

but one of the NARKN picks up a pipe.

Laura:

And lunges for the remaining Centauri.

Laura:

Zack tries to warn him to put it down.

Laura:

But he refuses and Zack fires.

Laura:

Killing the unnamed Dennard.

Xhafer:

Yep.

Xhafer:

I mean, this was.

Xhafer:

This unfortunately has been something that is timely in American culture for

Xhafer:

long enough, where this was timely back.

Xhafer:

When this episode aired.

Xhafer:

You would have been talking about Rodney king back then instead of.

Xhafer:

Uh, like George Floyd now.

Xhafer:

But.

Xhafer:

Uh, man, it just.

Xhafer:

Uh, I just, I, this was really difficult for me.

Xhafer:

And.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

I don't know how to talk about it because.

Laura:

You know, there's that clear?

Laura:

Like he's still aggressing when he's been told not to.

Laura:

Um, but he also, he brought a pipe to a gunfight.

Laura:

Like.

Laura:

Uh, it's not.

Xhafer:

He does.

Xhafer:

She does charge him like.

Xhafer:

Like actually, he does actually charge him.

Xhafer:

He does actually make an aggressive action instead of just being there.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Which is unfortunately what we've seen all too often.

Laura:

So in Sheridan's office.

Laura:

Dzhokhar and shared an argue about this incident.

Laura:

Sheridan wants to help.

Laura:

But.

Laura:

Uh, NAR and refusing to comply with our earth force personnel has made it hard.

Laura:

Jared and reiterate, you know, this is neutral territory.

Laura:

If you can't control yourselves here, you're going to have to leave.

Laura:

Because you compromise the neutrality of this place, this space.

Xhafer:

It's true.

Xhafer:

The neutrality is what makes Babylon five Babylon five.

Laura:

Right.

Xhafer:

Otherwise it'd be another earth force station.

Laura:

Right.

Laura:

If you're jeopardizing that neutrality, then it stops being what it is.

Laura:

And so you will have to go.

Xhafer:

We've got some MetaLab where Franklins morals get

Xhafer:

questioned by the libertarian ADI.

Xhafer:

And they're like, bro.

Xhafer:

It's survival of the fittest and just let them die.

Xhafer:

Like have you been read Atlas shrugged Idiocracy was a warning to be acted on,

Xhafer:

not satire, like what's wrong with you?

Laura:

It's so, so horrifying to come.

Laura:

Cause I remember this episode from when I was a kid and I remember it being cringy.

Laura:

Like I I've cringed at this episode all my life and I continue to do so.

Laura:

Uh, but also the limb ADI are super into eugenics.

Xhafer:

Uh, so fun fact JMS I'd use net said that these two characters

Xhafer:

were specifically inspired by Bob Dolan, nuke, Anchorage.

Laura:

Oh, my God.

Laura:

Oh, how, how flattering for Bob Jola?

Laura:

Newt Gingrich.

Xhafer:

Yup.

Laura:

Oh man.

Laura:

So yeah.

Laura:

The doctor gets his, you know, his special brand of

Laura:

righteously, angry about all this.

Xhafer:

A hundred percent.

Laura:

Oh, Ivanova tries to scoot them along.

Laura:

and the, uh, Lumata condescendingly told the doctor that his strange

Laura:

ideas will pass with time.

Laura:

Just like.

Laura:

You'll get more conservative as you get older.

Laura:

I've heard that one.

Laura:

Have you heard that one?

Xhafer:

Oh, have I heard that one?

Laura:

Oh boy.

Xhafer:

we cut to Londo at the casino who has been waiting for Garibaldi to show up.

Xhafer:

because he really just wants a friend.

Laura:

Yeah, this is

Xhafer:

but Garibaldi is, he's not interested.

Xhafer:

He's like, I don't even know who you are anymore.

Xhafer:

Alondo like, You're trying to buy my friendship now.

Xhafer:

Like, what is this?

Xhafer:

Get fuck off Londo.

Xhafer:

Like who are you?

Xhafer:

I don't even know anymore.

Xhafer:

who are you Lando?

Laura:

It does tell me that something very nice about Garibaldi though.

Laura:

He's clearly that friend who, when they loan you money.

Laura:

Just considers it a gift because he didn't expect to get this money back from

Laura:

Londo.

Laura:

Like I think that's a very healthy way to look at loaning money to friends.

Laura:

You know, if you get it back.

Laura:

Great.

Laura:

And if you don't, you made him a gift.

Laura:

So, that's very healthy.

Laura:

Congratulations, Garibaldi.

Xhafer:

Yeah, don't loan.

Xhafer:

Anyone money, you wouldn't give money

Laura:

Right.

Laura:

And don't loan money you don't have.

Laura:

So he's clearly not put himself at any sort of risk of not eating by

Laura:

loaning this money to Garibaldi.

Laura:

It was, you know, Freely given because he had it to freely give.

Laura:

but everybody's afraid of Londo now.

Xhafer:

Yeah, well, I mean, rightfully so he is kind of mysteriously

Xhafer:

destroying entire quadrants of space.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

And he can tell all these, you know, Groupies.

Laura:

And hangers on are not real friends.

Laura:

And he's sad and it is.

Laura:

Sad in a way.

Xhafer:

He just wants a friend who isn't there.

Xhafer:

Just for their own self-interest.

Laura:

But this is definitely a situation he created by his own actions

Laura:

and

Xhafer:

A hundred percent.

Laura:

have.

Laura:

had a little bit of forethought to foresee, but.

Laura:

You know, Garibaldi does cave.

Laura:

He promises to stop by later.

Laura:

And every time they cut to this bar tender.

Laura:

The it's just so, so sad because you can tell, she knows the truth.

Laura:

You can tell she seen this kind of interaction.

Laura:

Hundreds thousands of times.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

It's very sad.

Laura:

Oh, you know, most of the people she's having this interaction with

Laura:

aren't like genocidal monsters.

Laura:

They might be some other kind of presumably.

Laura:

You would think you would have hear that about, you know,

Laura:

in universe at some point,

Laura:

but.

Xhafer:

All all types on Babylon five.

Xhafer:

we cut to Dzhokhar telling us people on the station to stay in line.

Xhafer:

But if they really want to fight, they can go join the military.

Xhafer:

It's like.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

If you want to go kill some Centauri, go kill some Centauri.

Xhafer:

Just go to Homeworld.

Xhafer:

Sign up for the military.

Xhafer:

You'll get your chance.

Xhafer:

Don't act all big and strong.

Xhafer:

When you can jump somebody behind the fucking bar.

Laura:

He used to stop being an armchair freedom fighter.

Laura:

And I do find like armchair experts on things, particularly frustrating myself.

Laura:

So I totally get it Jakarta.

Xhafer:

Immediately after Dzhokhar walks away, they can listen

Laura:

Yeah, they just pull him out of the hallway and stab him as they

Laura:

kill message.

Xhafer:

just like, oh yeah.

Xhafer:

What's your car stab.

Laura:

And not only that, but they're going to kill all Centauri on the station

Laura:

and six hours is what they've decided.

Laura:

very

Xhafer:

Mike Everett, everyone go take a nap in six hours.

Xhafer:

We're killing all of us in Tori.

Laura:

Like, what do you think is going to happen?

Laura:

After you've killed all the Centauri on the station at six hours late.

Laura:

I don't know.

Laura:

Nope.

Laura:

They're not.

Laura:

It's the little lizard brain, right?

Laura:

The little amygdala.

Laura:

Or whatever you would call it in a Nard.

Laura:

Firing and doing the wrong things.

Xhafer:

Yup.

Xhafer:

So in MetaLab they confirm, but not completely that the

Xhafer:

centaury was killed by an ARN.

Xhafer:

Garibaldi wants to tell Londo, but Sheridan tells him he can't.

Xhafer:

And this is what actually, I feel prevents Garibaldi from joining Londo.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

They don't explicitly say it, but I think Garibaldi is like, you

Xhafer:

got to tell Londo and he's all like, you can't tell Londo, that's an order.

Xhafer:

It's just going to make things worse.

Xhafer:

This is why he stands Londo up

Laura:

Yeah, I think that's.

Laura:

It's a very good.

Laura:

Good.

Laura:

Read of it.

Laura:

And I think Sheridan's completely.

Laura:

Reasonable though right here.

Xhafer:

Yeah, he's got a point.

Xhafer:

A hundred percent.

Xhafer:

It's just going to escalate more violence.

Laura:

And you can, you can hide behind bureaucracy if you need to.

Laura:

Like, we couldn't sign off on anything until we had something

Laura:

conclusive on the autopsy.

Laura:

Like I totally get why he's doing it.

Xhafer:

After this, the Lumata crash of, on of his quarters on a

Laura:

Oh, my God.

Laura:

Oh, my

Laura:

God.

Xhafer:

Uh, it's so cringy.

Xhafer:

Uh, they're just rude as hell.

Xhafer:

start just.

Xhafer:

And pushing around under stuff, they steal a piece of her

Laura:

Yes.

Laura:

Part of her pajamas.

Laura:

We know that's her pajamas.

Laura:

Because if we haven't seen it yet, we will see it later.

Laura:

That that's what she wears to sleep.

Laura:

And, you know, they they're there because ostensibly, they want to

Laura:

see something real on the station.

Laura:

They think that she's curating their experience, that she's

Laura:

trying to set things up to show off the best parts of Babylon five

Laura:

and the best parts of humanity.

Laura:

And they want to see all the real nitty gritty.

Laura:

Which apparently involves her panty Gerard.

Laura:

Uh,

Xhafer:

Uh,

Xhafer:

the Narcan's.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Uh, just.

Xhafer:

The.

Xhafer:

Anyways, the Narcan's by some swords from the mall gift shop vendor.

Laura:

Please and

Laura:

knives.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

At the mall

Laura:

gift

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Did you have one of those that the mall gift shop that sells

Laura:

Is that in Spencer's that feels like Spencer's right.

Xhafer:

I don't.

Xhafer:

I mean, it was always like some unnamed place.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Like a local.

Laura:

Establishment.

Laura:

Definitely.

Xhafer:

Yeah, and it was just gift shop and it was always

Xhafer:

just like rugs and swords.

Xhafer:

And random in chotchkies, you know?

Laura:

That's gone out of fashion.

Laura:

Hasn't it.

Xhafer:

Sure has.

Xhafer:

Actually, uh, I watched a tick tock earlier.

Xhafer:

I should say I was sent a Tik TOK earlier because that's the actual truth of it.

Xhafer:

That is with someone looking at a bunch of tchotchkes.

Xhafer:

Key shelves in a, uh, In a like Goodwill and they're just like in 30 years,

Xhafer:

this is going to be all Funko pops.

Laura:

Nice.

Laura:

back.

Laura:

Okay.

Laura:

I actually had three scrub points in this episode.

Laura:

Now that I'm looking at it.

Laura:

So we cut back to Sheridan's office.

Laura:

And we have, him talking to an earth force representative on the TV.

Laura:

About the Narcan situation.

Xhafer:

Yeah, general Richard Cunningham.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

About 25 0 8.

Laura:

On the HBO max scrubber.

Laura:

why is this man sitting front of so many fans?

Laura:

He's just sitting in front of a wall of fans.

Laura:

You guys, you got to look at it.

Laura:

It's very funny.

Laura:

I don't know

Laura:

where he

Xhafer:

This was actually called out by JMS.

Xhafer:

Someone had used that, notice this, when the episode aired, it

Xhafer:

was all like, what is going on?

Xhafer:

Why is he in front of a bunch of fans?

Xhafer:

And JMS is like, honestly, I have no idea.

Xhafer:

I was editing the day that they filmed this and I just saw the

Xhafer:

footage afterwards and was furious.

Xhafer:

Um, But we always appreciate more fans here at Babylon

Laura:

Nice.

Xhafer:

He went for the pun.

Laura:

I laughed really hard.

Laura:

It's one of those things, if you're just watching it surface level

Laura:

and you're just, you're just like, oh, it's a guy on the, on the TV.

Laura:

What?

Laura:

Okay.

Laura:

But if you're looking behind him, It's like at least nine to 12 fans.

Laura:

It's very funny.

Laura:

But anyway.

Laura:

Mr fan decides, that earth force can't give any official help.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

not, we're staying out of this.

Xhafer:

Sheridan takes the note and reaches out to Dylan.

Laura:

Meanwhile, Natasha is alerting Dzhokhar to the mass murder plot.

Laura:

Dzhokhar decides he's got to take care of this himself.

Laura:

Natasha insists on coming with, she's not going to let him go down there by himself.

Xhafer:

Yep.

Xhafer:

we, we moved to the libertarian naughty, admiring the lack of an economic net

Xhafer:

and welfare that the station provides.

Laura:

there's so much lack of an economic safety net that at 26 0 6.

Laura:

This is my scrub point.

Laura:

Number two.

Xhafer:

The roast and the

Laura:

The roasting lizards.

Laura:

Over like a barrel.

Xhafer:

Is this what prompted a year?

Xhafer:

Who are you earlier?

Xhafer:

I wanted to ask then, but I figured we'd hit it

Laura:

Oh, my God.

Laura:

It's just subconscious.

Laura:

Really?

Laura:

My brain just putting together things like thinking about lizards and.

Laura:

Reptiles.

Laura:

We did see a lot of lizards in New Mexico.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Ah, yeah, that checks.

Laura:

man.

Laura:

So yeah, we're roasting lizards.

Xhafer:

We get a whole speech here about how humans have the strength

Xhafer:

to segment off their inferior instead of just mercy, killing them.

Xhafer:

And that they can use them as a workforce without the a

Xhafer:

means for growth or challenge.

Xhafer:

And that they're just going to Institute this back home.

Xhafer:

It's all like a class system.

Xhafer:

Oh, we never thought about

Xhafer:

this.

Laura:

And avant.

Laura:

Felt.

Laura:

Comfortable referring to these people with the derogatory.

Laura:

You know, lurker designation.

Laura:

So like clearly she's internalized.

Laura:

Some of this is totally fine herself.

Xhafer:

She's just appalled though.

Xhafer:

Like at this description of the economic situation, which

Xhafer:

is a hundred percent accurate.

Laura:

It's an accurate description for sure.

Laura:

Uh, she has the good sense to be embarrassed about it, but they love it.

Xhafer:

Yeah, so much so that the ambassador speaks without talk.

Xhafer:

You know, A a diplomatic backbone for Alliance must be

Xhafer:

formed on a cultural similarity.

Xhafer:

Not a tactical advantage.

Xhafer:

And this is ours.

Xhafer:

I was just like, oh God.

Laura:

really fucking dark.

Laura:

I never caught that as a child, but that is really fucking dark.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

We're our similarities of culture that we, you know, We practice

Laura:

eugenics and you guys kind of are too.

Laura:

You just don't know it.

Xhafer:

Yeah, you're just embarrassed about it.

Xhafer:

Y it's genius.

Xhafer:

You guys are great at this.

Xhafer:

Much more efficient than what we're doing.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

So they decided to, Go off and discuss what terms they're

Laura:

willing to offer in this Alliance.

Laura:

Hooray.

Xhafer:

Dzhokhar, goes and beats up that NARKN.

Laura:

they, they you're rallying for the lynching and Dzhokhar Berson.

Laura:

To assert his authority.

Laura:

Jakarta and the NARKN leader of this little group challenge,

Laura:

one another to a fight.

Laura:

Uh, it looks very crouching tiger, hidden ARN.

Laura:

We got our.

Laura:

Arms out.

Laura:

Uh, And the final scrub point happens in this.

Laura:

Scene where?

Laura:

Uh, at 29, 26, we have some great fight choreography, obviously.

Laura:

and.

Laura:

Well, the Narin leader, just like leapfrog.

Laura:

Frog's right over to Dzhokhar's back before getting his ass handed to him.

Xhafer:

Yeah, just this arm just broken in one swing.

Xhafer:

And it's terrifying.

Laura:

Dzhokhar yells at them to go home.

Laura:

if peace on the station is going to help win the war at home, then they

Laura:

are going to have to just do it.

Xhafer:

Yup.

Laura:

The NARKN leader, stabs, Jakarta, and the back.

Laura:

before Dzhokhar is able to deck him.

Laura:

but Natasha helps your car out without, you know, calling for medical assistance.

Laura:

He wants to walk away

Laura:

strong.

Laura:

It was only a little poisoned.

Laura:

That's what he tells us.

Xhafer:

A little poison.

Laura:

How do you know.

Laura:

You've only been a little poisoned.

Laura:

Oh, well,

Xhafer:

The fact that you can feel that your points and it all means that you're

Xhafer:

probably more than a little poison.

Laura:

Right.

Xhafer:

Anyways, after this Sheridan, Dillon discuss using Franklins underground

Xhafer:

railroad to get medical supplies and food to the NARKN and to get civilians

Xhafer:

out, not in an official capacity.

Xhafer:

They note that they can't do a lot, but they can do something.

Laura:

Yeah, we've got excess food around here.

Laura:

If you've got some MRA transports who will take it.

Laura:

You know, then together we can do something it's not.

Laura:

You know, it's not nothing and we can get a few people out.

Laura:

Dylan points out, you know, this is very risky.

Laura:

But, uh, Sheridan believes this is a matter of conscience, not convenience, so

Laura:

good on him.

Xhafer:

We cut back to the Lumosity who want to finalize

Xhafer:

the Alliance, the traditional

Xhafer:

way.

Xhafer:

Fucking.

Xhafer:

And Ivanova fix a phone call To Corrine.

Laura:

yeah.

Xhafer:

get herself the hell out of there.

Laura:

She does the time honored tradition that we ladies are all known to.

Laura:

Do we phone a

Laura:

friend?

Xhafer:

Um, yup.

Xhafer:

Uh, I, I do have a bit of commentary on this right now.

Laura:

it.

Xhafer:

I'm not saying that this is good or correct in either regard.

Xhafer:

Just to get it out there off the top.

Xhafer:

I'm not trying to suggest this is a good way to do anything.

Xhafer:

Especially the cavalier way of which it is brought about because

Xhafer:

he just starts on rubbing.

Xhafer:

In Sheraton's

Xhafer:

office.

Laura:

office.

Laura:

That's

Xhafer:

But for a moment of introspection.

Xhafer:

On our own human culture.

Xhafer:

How different is this from Royals getting married off to

Xhafer:

secure alliances in medieval

Laura:

Oh, yeah, no, that that's definitely like a.

Laura:

historical basis for it.

Laura:

Right.

Xhafer:

Or arranged marriages throughout most of history.

Xhafer:

Like it's, it's really almost a more civilized version of

Xhafer:

that to be perfectly honest.

Xhafer:

Because it's not a lifetime commitment.

Laura:

like we're just going to do this thing really quick instead of you.

Laura:

And I now have to.

Laura:

Try to rule together or.

Laura:

Ma make our Alliance work.

Laura:

yeah, I mean, it's similar.

Laura:

What this episode strikes me.

Laura:

Of is that, that nineties trend that happened in a lot

Laura:

of star tracks, at least.

Laura:

And well, it happened in other shows too.

Laura:

I Seinfeld this one that comes up to my mind is like, Ah, let's have

Laura:

an episode about the sex mishap, you know, the silly, sexy situation ha.

Laura:

Uh, I'm so glad that I don't feel like Babylon five has as many

Laura:

of these as some other shows.

Laura:

Um, but I do hate this episode for that.

Laura:

To just spoil.

Laura:

So a little bit.

Laura:

She runs off from her awkward situation.

Laura:

Insecurity, Natasha.

Laura:

Has offered up the non leader who killed this entire tree.

Laura:

She's.

Laura:

giving him as a peace offering Sheraton and Garibaldi, except that.

Laura:

Also Kara Baldy does a great Londo impression.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

It's definitely a Lando impression that passes.

Laura:

It's perfect.

Laura:

I love it.

Xhafer:

Ivanova talks to Franklin, the stations, leading

Xhafer:

authority on inappropriate sexual

Xhafer:

advances.

Laura:

Oh,

Laura:

This This frustrates me because you know, she's

Laura:

got

Xhafer:

Cause he suggests the paper

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

she's got a serious problem and he makes an insensitive joke.

Laura:

then he goes, well, Well, I could, I could make you get sick.

Laura:

So he is like trying to help, like after that, he just had to

Laura:

get his terrible joke out first.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

This.

Xhafer:

This miserable discourse does give her an idea.

Xhafer:

However,

Laura:

big brain.

Xhafer:

Dzhokhar is dealing with injury.

Xhafer:

And gets himself way too excited for the news.

Xhafer:

He's about to get.

Xhafer:

He keeps his a discontent.

Xhafer:

And disappointment together for a moment.

Xhafer:

As he gets the news that they're going to help in an unofficial capacity.

Xhafer:

And that if he tells anyone that he was able to secure help from other races,

Xhafer:

then they're going to lose that help.

Xhafer:

So he can't even use, it has like a way to back up his leadership was just

Xhafer:

clearly being questioned right now.

Xhafer:

So it's just like, it's.

Xhafer:

It saves lives, but at his sacrifice, Of being able to leverage it or do anything.

Xhafer:

Or like, it is just, he gets this level of help.

Xhafer:

If he pushes for any more, he's going to lose it.

Xhafer:

If he tells anyone about it, he's going to lose it.

Xhafer:

But he needs it even though it's not what he wanted.

Laura:

Yeah, this is a

Laura:

very.

Xhafer:

what they really needed to be perfectly

Laura:

It's not what they really needed is what the only what they can get.

Laura:

It's very important help, but there are other layers that would have been

Laura:

important that he's being denied.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

And Dre is just acts the hell out of this laugh, cry.

Xhafer:

he walks into the hallway, um, there's actually a quote from him.

Xhafer:

In the season guidebook.

Xhafer:

Where he's all like, This is key is a very evil man for putting his

Xhafer:

actors through scenes like this.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

This was his quote.

Xhafer:

I'm just like, whoa.

Laura:

And it's very heavy.

Laura:

He gets the hardest character in that way.

Laura:

I think.

Laura:

Well, you know, you can make arguments in any direction, but.

Laura:

At this moment, it's definitely the hardest character.

Laura:

But speaking of characters with hard jobs in her

Laura:

quarters.

Laura:

Ivanova Trixie ambassador into thinking that they have had sex.

Laura:

And this is the worst scene of all Babylon five, and I will be taking no questions.

Laura:

Thank you very much.

Xhafer:

Oh, we, we got to talk about her hair in

Xhafer:

its

Laura:

you've.

Xhafer:

out nineties

Laura:

You can talk about it.

Laura:

It's fine.

Laura:

But I still hate it.

Laura:

I love her hair though.

Xhafer:

Yeah, her hair is glorious in this scene.

Xhafer:

It's just like, uh, it's just, it's ridiculous.

Laura:

they let her have fun.

Laura:

Hair is good.

Xhafer:

she does a ridiculous song and dance after tricking the Lumada.

Xhafer:

Body into having sex human style.

Xhafer:

Uh, it's faked an orgasm and tells him he was great.

Laura:

Uh, Uh,

Xhafer:

he asked what now, and this is, this is hilarious.

Xhafer:

This quote is hilarious.

Xhafer:

Like what now?

Xhafer:

He's like old style.

Xhafer:

You rollover and fall asleep.

Xhafer:

New style.

Xhafer:

We go out for pizza.

Xhafer:

Never speak again.

Xhafer:

That's hilarious.

Xhafer:

I don't.

Xhafer:

The rest of the scene.

Xhafer:

Feel free to be upset about.

Xhafer:

I understand being upset about it.

Xhafer:

A hundred percent.

Xhafer:

Um, But that quote is hilarious.

Xhafer:

I don't, I don't care.

Xhafer:

I will say if this gets rebooted for HBO max though, like if they redo this.

Xhafer:

This turns into like a dominatrix thing, right?

Laura:

Um,

Laura:

good.

Xhafer:

it.

Xhafer:

Like you take this in a weirder, well, not a weirder direction, but

Xhafer:

maybe a more serious, but also not what he had expected direction.

Laura:

Oh,

Xhafer:

there are some definite human sex stuff that we've probably

Xhafer:

not at all what he was expecting.

Xhafer:

That you could totally bring into it.

Xhafer:

Like some really weird fetish thing that she's just doing to make him

Xhafer:

think human sex is disgusting.

Laura:

She could just tie him up and leave him.

Xhafer:

right.

Laura:

Yeah, no.

Laura:

I could, I could totally see that.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

That's definitely the HBO version though.

Laura:

Right?

Laura:

Not the CW.

Xhafer:

Yeah, just flog them for three hours.

Xhafer:

Good times.

Laura:

shades of Babylon five.

Xhafer:

So.

Xhafer:

Um, so I know we made that 50 shades joke last episode.

Xhafer:

I'm going to go ahead and officially throw out there that.

Xhafer:

There's no way we can do this.

Xhafer:

Because there are two other Babylon five podcasts that recently got started.

Xhafer:

One is only on like their second or third episode right now.

Xhafer:

And it's the gray 17 podcast.

Xhafer:

And then there's also the gray sector podcast.

Xhafer:

I have not listened to either of these podcasts, just full disclosure.

Xhafer:

I recently learned of their existence.

Xhafer:

I've not had any time because I'm still doing my kitchen.

Xhafer:

Renno.

Xhafer:

so I've not listened to either of these.

Xhafer:

but I think it's, there's.

Laura:

obviously, this

Laura:

idea is

Xhafer:

I they've, they've got gray in their title.

Xhafer:

So, you know, 50 shades of gray sector or gray, 50 shades,

Xhafer:

whatever you want to do, like.

Laura:

Go with

Xhafer:

Just.

Xhafer:

We're just going to let you have that.

Xhafer:

That's a freebie from us to you.

Xhafer:

It's a gift we give you Really?

Xhafer:

It is yours.

Laura:

Yup.

Xhafer:

it.

Laura:

So we get past all that horribleness that I definitely

Laura:

did not leave the room for.

Xhafer:

And then Londo, uh, doesn't make the murder a whole thing.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

I mean, he's actually super cool.

Laura:

He's there in Sheridan's office.

Laura:

Like begging Londo police.

Laura:

Be cool, man.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

cool.

Xhafer:

And he's like, the sky was a shit.

Xhafer:

I told him he was going to fuck up and he did.

Xhafer:

So, uh, we're going to deport the snark.

Xhafer:

We're gonna seize all of his belongings and auction them.

Xhafer:

And the money is going to go to the centaury military.

Xhafer:

Because the irony is justice enough.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

just a is.

Laura:

Relatively lenient and very amiable when he leaves.

Laura:

Sheridan catches Ivanova and the officer's club.

Laura:

With a gift from the ambassador, it's probably a sex toy.

Xhafer:

It's something.

Xhafer:

Yeah, I don't, I don't know what that would be.

Xhafer:

I thought it was a little hat, but you're right.

Xhafer:

A sex toy makes way

Xhafer:

more sense.

Laura:

it though.

Xhafer:

I don't.

Xhafer:

I don't, I'm not gonna that's.

Xhafer:

That Amy, I don't know what that thing's for.

Laura:

Uh, Wanda is back alone in the casino near closing time.

Laura:

And Garibaldi shows up and an awful 90 shirt, which is every

Laura:

time Garibaldi or Sheridan were any male on the show, whereas not their

Laura:

uniform.

Laura:

Yeah, just so awful.

Laura:

He thinks Londo for being cool.

Laura:

and Londo says, Hey, if it makes your life easier, then I'm happy.

Laura:

And that's actually a very sweet thing for a genocidal person to say,

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

Uh, so the Bart, I don't know if you caught this, but the bartender

Laura:

sits down a definitely, probably not chemically inoffensive drink.

Laura:

Which is probably

Laura:

Wanda's.

Laura:

You think so?

Xhafer:

hundred percent.

Xhafer:

That's a Shirley

Laura:

No.

Laura:

You look at, look at Garibaldi.

Laura:

His face is he's deciding whether or not to drink this drink.

Xhafer:

No, he smiles.

Xhafer:

He knows.

Xhafer:

He knows that as a chemically inoffensive Drake.

Xhafer:

Hundred percent.

Xhafer:

That's a Shirley temple.

Xhafer:

Like you look at it, it's the right color.

Xhafer:

It's just that diluted grenadine red.

Xhafer:

It's got the cherry in it, the whole deal it's served exactly.

Xhafer:

Like how you'd serve a Shirley temple.

Xhafer:

I looked at that drink with my bartending days in mind and I was

Xhafer:

like, oh, he got a Shirley temple.

Xhafer:

That's cute.

Xhafer:

I think he's humored that a Shirley temple was ordered for him instead of a water.

Xhafer:

Is what I think

Xhafer:

it is to be perfectly honest.

Xhafer:

That's how I read that scene.

Laura:

Oh, I read it as he's like, he spends a long time looking at this drink.

Laura:

Like he's deciding if he's going to drink it or not.

Laura:

And then

Xhafer:

I think he's deciding if he's going to keep company

Xhafer:

with Londo more than the drink.

Laura:

Okay.

Laura:

So you think Londo did give him a chemically inoffensive drink?

Xhafer:

Yes.

Laura:

it differently.

Laura:

Huh?

Xhafer:

I am convinced.

Xhafer:

A hundred percent, that that is a non alcoholic beverage.

Xhafer:

Londa would not.

Xhafer:

Risk.

Xhafer:

Losing his literal only friend.

Xhafer:

Over subspecialist in the, he knows that has been such a problem too.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Okay.

Laura:

So his, his, like, Look on his face is him deciding whether or not he

Laura:

could be friends with this person who is probably a genocidal maniac.

Laura:

Not about an alcoholic drink.

Laura:

Okay.

Laura:

Uh, yes, I'll buy into that.

Laura:

I thought it was, it was alcoholic and he was about to slip down his.

Laura:

off the wagon path.

Xhafer:

Nope.

Xhafer:

No, I'm I, that was a hundred percent of Shirley temple.

Xhafer:

Like I thought about, I saw that and it was all like, I'm gonna make myself one.

Xhafer:

Like.

Xhafer:

Thinking about it.

Xhafer:

that's fine though.

Xhafer:

I mean it, I guess it could be either way.

Xhafer:

but I don't think we get like a Garibaldi alcoholic relapse for a while.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

I think that's a plot point in a later season, but.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

It's

Laura:

I

Laura:

know

Xhafer:

I don't comes around for a bit.

Laura:

when.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Anyways.

Xhafer:

Uh, in something that will probably not agree on at all.

Xhafer:

Laura.

Xhafer:

On a scale of Babylon, one to five.

Xhafer:

How'd you feel about this episode?

Laura:

I hate the B plot.

Laura:

hate it so much.

Laura:

I didn't like sitting through this B plot when I was a child.

Laura:

And I didn't really understand what was going on there at the end.

Laura:

Like, cause you don't know what sex is really

Laura:

like.

Laura:

but I could feel that it was uncomfortable.

Laura:

And it's only gotten worse with age.

Laura:

For me.

Xhafer:

Yeah, I mean, personally, feeling uncomfortable with that scene.

Xhafer:

Hundred percent.

Laura:

It's just hard to see.

Laura:

kind of experience.

Laura:

That I've had that, that I know so many other women have had.

Laura:

You know, I know singers who've been literally chased around the

Laura:

piano by a composer or a pianist.

Laura:

played for laughs.

Laura:

It's really hard.

Xhafer:

that's fair.

Xhafer:

A hundred percent.

Xhafer:

And my read of it is a little different.

Xhafer:

, I see a situation of someone who is put into something uncomfortable like that.

Xhafer:

And takes ownership of it and turns it back on that person.

Laura:

I hate the onus being put on us for that.

Xhafer:

A hundred percent.

Laura:

I hate that that was something that I saw as a young girl.

Laura:

That.

Laura:

Hey, you're going to have to think your way out of this box.

Laura:

There's no one to help you.

Laura:

I hate that.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

No, no, it should not be her job to do it.

Xhafer:

You know, You're correct.

Xhafer:

And everything that you've said, you know, we do put in unfair

Xhafer:

responsibility as a society on women to avoid a sexual assault.

Xhafer:

That is a very real problem that we have as a culture.

Laura:

I just feel like the message.

Laura:

Contributed to that.

Laura:

And whether or not he intended it.

Laura:

It's like, well, I got this strong character and she's going

Laura:

to think her way out of it.

Laura:

And it's like, That's not always how it works.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

You can be a strong ass person and still not have this experience.

Laura:

This episode is, is below average, Babylon five for me.

Laura:

And it's not anything to do with a plot.

Laura:

You know, I think that's very hard stuff.

Laura:

That we're grappling with, with these NARKN and Centauri.

Laura:

Tara.

Laura:

And I think that Andrea says brilliant.

Laura:

In his acting throughout the whole thing.

Laura:

Uh, the ending of the Lumosity pot kills it for me.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

It makes me super uncomfortable.

Laura:

something that.

Laura:

Aye.

Laura:

Want to see, played for laughs in my media.

Laura:

Um,

Xhafer:

fair.

Laura:

And to me that just bumps it below the average.

Laura:

So I would have to give this one, a two out of five.

Laura:

Babylon's.

Xhafer:

A hundred percent.

Xhafer:

I, I feel like.

Xhafer:

The Lumata stuff was a lot.

Xhafer:

for sure.

Xhafer:

Just all of it in general.

Xhafer:

it is a very cutting criticism of some of the worst aspects of our culture.

Xhafer:

Uh, which is very difficult to see through and on your face in a way

Xhafer:

that is very unappetizing on purpose.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

And so like how I felt about growth posts.

Xhafer:

It, it did a good job of making me feel bad at times, for sure.

Xhafer:

especially with, uh, the message about how we treat our poor or our undesirables.

Xhafer:

but there's a lot of really good character work for both Alondo

Xhafer:

and Dzhokhar in this episode.

Xhafer:

That I do really appreciate.

Xhafer:

And so I'm going to give it a three out of five for that.

Laura:

Yeah, it really.

Laura:

Gets that sort of hue.

Laura:

It's weird to say humanization, but a humanization back to Londo.

Laura:

As we see him just speak kind of sad.

Laura:

And

Laura:

pathetic.

Laura:

Dick.

Laura:

he's done horrible monstrous things in the last few episodes,

Laura:

and that's all very fresh.

Laura:

And yet he's just kind of a sad person.

Xhafer:

And he needs to be here.

Xhafer:

So that he can respond how he responds in a couple of episodes.

Xhafer:

To the heavy stuff that's on its way right now for him.

Xhafer:

Uh, no pun intended.

Laura:

looking forward.

Laura:

It seems like there.

Laura:

is a lot of heavy stuff coming up.

Laura:

Can you tell us about the next episode?

Xhafer:

Yeah, we've got season two episode 13, hunter prey.

Xhafer:

In earth, special agent searches the station for a supposedly military

Xhafer:

criminal, but Sheridan knows better.

Xhafer:

I'm guessing some more conspiracy theory stuff from him.

Xhafer:

Uh, cosh, except Sheridan's invitation to share information

Xhafer:

about their respective cultures.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

So we get to know more about Kosh, maybe.

Laura:

Question mark.

Laura:

I'm excited.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

I don't remember this episode at all offhand.

Xhafer:

But.

Xhafer:

see.

Xhafer:

Maybe I do, there might be a bit with cash that I'm remembering,

Xhafer:

but I think that's later.

Laura:

Yeah, there was a bit that with caution that I was hoping was in this

Laura:

episode, I have gone ahead and watched it.

Laura:

Uh, it was not there yet.

Laura:

So.

Xhafer:

Okay.

Laura:

If we're thinking of the same bit, we both have to wait.

Xhafer:

I bet we are.

Xhafer:

All right.
