Transcript
Xhafer:

hello, and welcome to who are you?

Xhafer:

A Babylon five watch cast hosted by two friends who have gotten to know

Xhafer:

each other while rewatching a show from the childhood Babylon five I'm

Laura:

And I'm Laura.

Xhafer:

And today we're going to play a card game.

Xhafer:

We did this a couple of weeks ago.

Xhafer:

I don't remember if we came up with a name for this.

Xhafer:

I don't think we did.

Laura:

I don't either.

Xhafer:

If we did, please remind us what it was listeners.

Xhafer:

If you do remember, if we didn't.

Xhafer:

Then come up with suggestions and we'll pick the one we like.

Laura:

Yeah, feel free to name our card bit.

Xhafer:

Name the card bet.

Xhafer:

It is the worst contest since the find the rest of the nail on the big Mac

Xhafer:

contest.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Okay.

Laura:

So

Laura:

remind us of the

Laura:

rules.

Xhafer:

So we have a bunch of Babylon, five collectible card game cards.

Xhafer:

We've opened a number of packs in addition to the packs that we've already opened.

Xhafer:

Since last time to mix up the carpool a little bit.

Xhafer:

And we have four piles of cards.

Xhafer:

We have a, actor.

Xhafer:

So this could be a character, a fleet, a group, something that arrives on

Xhafer:

the station or is on ,the station.

Xhafer:

That is involved in a thing.

Xhafer:

We have the thing that they are involved with, which is the problem.

Xhafer:

And we have the solution to that problem.

Xhafer:

And then we have the twist at the end where either it goes right or it

Xhafer:

goes wrong and we see what happens.

Xhafer:

And what we do is we've got all these cards separated.

Xhafer:

I've got four in front of me, one from each pile.

Xhafer:

So does Laura, we're going to flip them up and we're going to use them

Xhafer:

to tell the, a story and B story of an episode of Babylon five.

Xhafer:

And we are then going to rate this theoretical episode.

Xhafer:

Of Babylon five on our typical scale of Babylon's one to five.

Laura:

Well, everything we make has gotta be babble on five.

Laura:

Right.

Laura:

But.

Xhafer:

Yeah,

Laura:

let's see.

Xhafer:

We did a really good episode

Xhafer:

last time.

Xhafer:

That was very

Xhafer:

pleased with it.

Xhafer:

So,

Laura:

Let's see if we get lucky again.

Xhafer:

Yep.

Xhafer:

All right, Laura, take us on our eight

Xhafer:

plot.

Laura:

Okay.

Laura:

So I'm the eighth story this time.

Laura:

And.

Laura:

I have.

Laura:

For our main character or a character that's starting the story.

Laura:

I have ref Fen.

Laura:

10.

Laura:

It was a gray council, religious cast member.

Xhafer:

Ah,

Laura:

And.

Laura:

Ooh.

Laura:

gets himself into a situation.

Laura:

Involving racial hatred.

Laura:

That is my, my second card.

Laura:

So let's see.

Laura:

Racial hatred should involve the humans.

Laura:

Right?

Laura:

I mean that's, that's, uh, The men Baris kind of antagonist there.

Laura:

So.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

And I've given up the ghost from the war.

Xhafer:

Still upset about the, um, the murder of Ducati.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

And he's religious cast.

Laura:

So maybe he's got a pole beef about the soul's thing.

Laura:

He knows about the salt's originally cast knows that the men Bari

Laura:

souls are being reborn in humans.

Laura:

And maybe the solution to this problem is the humans having our souls,

Laura:

as we just eliminate all humans.

Laura:

Right.

Xhafer:

Yeah, then the souls have to come back to the

Xhafer:

MBARI.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

So he's, he's starting this.

Laura:

Racial hatred, Colt.

Laura:

There's my idea.

Laura:

Okay.

Laura:

And the solution to this problem.

Laura:

You know, it involves Babylon five because some attacks of this cult

Laura:

start happening on Babylon five.

Laura:

So his, his racially motivated religious Colt is.

Laura:

Taking down humans on Babylon five and we have to involve the human.

Laura:

Special ops.

Laura:

So we get a special ops team together.

Laura:

involving Garibaldi of course.

Laura:

also Sheridan, because he's got to be involved for some reason, you

Xhafer:

Yeah, for sure.

Xhafer:

No, he's yeah.

Xhafer:

He's he's gun tote and he's

Xhafer:

running in there.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

And he's teamed up with Dylan because he's, he's crushing

Laura:

on Dylan at this point.

Laura:

Right.

Laura:

And so he's teaming up and they're going to solve this thing together.

Laura:

The twist at the end.

Laura:

Is that, There are several men Bari that are killed in a

Laura:

dramatic and sort of public way.

Laura:

In this process of our resolving our story, and that creates further.

Laura:

Isolationism.

Laura:

Among them in Bari.

Xhafer:

All right.

Xhafer:

Well, that's a strong, a

Xhafer:

plot.

Laura:

You think so.

Laura:

All

Xhafer:

I think that's a good episode.

Xhafer:

All right.

Xhafer:

So our B plot is going to involve a commercial telepaths.

Laura:

Oh, okay.

Xhafer:

Right.

Xhafer:

specifically a bunch of telepaths are mysteriously, just like they're

Xhafer:

on their way to the station.

Xhafer:

And they're shipped gets blown

Xhafer:

up.

Xhafer:

And we know as the audience that it is a shadow ship that blows them up.

Laura:

Okay.

Xhafer:

now how they resolve this, uh, they're worried about any

Xhafer:

possible survivors out there, right?

Xhafer:

So they send a bunch of ships, but it's pretty far out.

Xhafer:

But Sheridan, in between everything else, pull some strings and get

Xhafer:

some emergency military aid.

Laura:

Okay.

Xhafer:

And gets, some earth Alliance ships, you know, maybe it's the

Xhafer:

Agamemnon, maybe it's one of his buddies or something that are out that way.

Xhafer:

To go and find the survivors.

Xhafer:

On the ship.

Xhafer:

But it ends.

Xhafer:

In prophecy, one of the telepaths has a vision of the future and shadow attacks.

Laura:

Okay.

Laura:

Hey.

Laura:

I'm going to RET con a little bit of my story and say that, there's signs

Laura:

of shadow influence on risk, then.

Xhafer:

Okay.

Laura:

well.

Xhafer:

There we go.

Laura:

Okay.

Laura:

So what do you think then?

Xhafer:

This is a strong episode.

Xhafer:

I like this episode.

Xhafer:

I'd watch this episode.

Laura:

Do you give it a four or you give it a five?

Laura:

How do you feel.

Xhafer:

I really like the concept of the Mim Bari.

Xhafer:

Sorry, responding to the loss of their souls with like, well, we

Xhafer:

have to just genocide, the humans.

Xhafer:

'cause that seems like something like you find out this is happening.

Xhafer:

Right.

Xhafer:

And then you've come to terms that, and then you've got time

Xhafer:

to process it and think about it.

Xhafer:

It's like, well, we've noticed we've had a less great souls for.

Xhafer:

A thousand years or something, whatever it is.

Xhafer:

Right.

Xhafer:

And it's like, well, let's just go.

Xhafer:

Take them back.

Laura:

Yeah, I think this could be a F

Laura:

a.

Laura:

Babylon five, five episode, like.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

You do it in the right way.

Laura:

We get the right actors.

Laura:

It's good.

Xhafer:

All right.

Xhafer:

I'm here for it.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Good job.

Xhafer:

Just like I am here for today's episode.

Xhafer:

Season two episode 13.

Xhafer:

Hunter prey.

Laura:

so we opened on this episode, we've got one of these

Laura:

great openings that I like a lot where we zoom in from outer space.

Laura:

Onto CNC.

Laura:

great attempt at CGI here.

Laura:

Gary baldies is looking for Sheridan and Ivanova, we've got

Laura:

tense music in the background that.

Laura:

You know, something important is happening and he seems shocked to

Laura:

find out that they've gone to bay 13.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

bay 13 of course, quarantined.

Xhafer:

as we find out why?

Xhafer:

Because CATIA ship

Xhafer:

is there.

Laura:

Yeah, cautious ship is there and it's creepy.

Xhafer:

Yup.

Xhafer:

They discuss how little they know about it.

Xhafer:

]. Laura: Sheridan gets

Xhafer:

The ring doorbell camera slash targeting laser.

Xhafer:

Now available on amazon.com.

Xhafer:

You know, I might.

Xhafer:

It doesn't sound too bad.

Xhafer:

Targeting camera man.

Xhafer:

Yes.

Xhafer:

You just like flip it on red dots.

Xhafer:

I think it's someone to back up

Xhafer:

off your porch.

Laura:

Yeah, it would, wouldn't it.

Xhafer:

Um, only in America.

Xhafer:

they talk a bit about, what's going on shirt and backs

Xhafer:

off the gun thing goes away.

Xhafer:

Ivanova reveals the reason for the core team besides just

Xhafer:

that.

Xhafer:

the gun thing popping out of the ship.

Xhafer:

Is also, considered dangerous because the workers were also having dreams

Xhafer:

where the ship was speaking to them.

Laura:

Creepy.

Xhafer:

Yup.

Laura:

That's our second reference to John's and dreams.

Laura:

I think.

Xhafer:

Yeah, there's a lot of that in

Xhafer:

this episode.

Xhafer:

Well, yeah.

Xhafer:

And the

Xhafer:

previous.

Laura:

Yeah, Sheridan saw him in his dreams.

Xhafer:

Garibaldi catches up and as they leave Kosh reveals, he

Xhafer:

was there watching them the whole

Xhafer:

time.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

And his ship says something to him.

Laura:

that we're, we are not to know.

Laura:

But.

Laura:

he's talking to his ship.

Laura:

In Sheridan's office, Garibaldi briefs, everybody that the

Laura:

president's personal physician has gone missing, and he's a trader.

Xhafer:

Yep.

Xhafer:

Dr.

Xhafer:

Jacobs, and they think he's already on

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Orders are shoot to kill despite his status as a civilian.

Laura:

Yeah, this is very suspicious.

Laura:

to share it.

Laura:

And especially we come back from theme.

Laura:

And we get Cal Hudson.

Xhafer:

Yeah, agent Derek Cranston.

Xhafer:

This is Bernie Casey.

Xhafer:

He's Cal Hudson on DS.

Xhafer:

He is also the teacher in bill and Ted's excellent adventure.

Laura:

Oh, really?

Xhafer:

Which is the first have to bill and Ted's excellent

Xhafer:

adventure actors in this

Xhafer:

episode.

Laura:

I caught the other one.

Laura:

I didn't catch this one.

Laura:

I got too excited about Cal Hudson and getting to play the drop again.

Xhafer:

yeah.

Laura:

yeah.

Laura:

so his explanation for authorizing extreme force is that.

Laura:

Jacob's has misused his security clearance.

Laura:

He's gotten data on a bunch of black ops.

Laura:

State secrets.

Laura:

And these could ruin relationships with half the non-aligned worlds.

Laura:

Which he says it just, you know, very blahzay, very it's a.

Laura:

glossed over really quickly, but that's sort of horrifying.

Laura:

Isn't it?

Xhafer:

I mean, I feel like this is the kind of stuff that you generally

Xhafer:

accept governments to do, but you don't want anyone to know, like

Xhafer:

it's watching the sausage get made.

Xhafer:

You know, like.

Xhafer:

I would expect.

Xhafer:

our government to have a plan for most countries deciding to attack us

Xhafer:

whether or not there's any realistic.

Xhafer:

Expectation of that

Xhafer:

happening.

Laura:

Yeah, but it's still one of those things you don't want to

Laura:

think about and your brain probably actively avoids thinking about it.

Xhafer:

sure.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

You don't want, you know, the news to hit and he's like, oh, United

Xhafer:

States plan to counter invade Russia.

Xhafer:

And you're just like, oh, that's terrible.

Xhafer:

Why do we have that?

Xhafer:

But of course we have that.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Somebody's got to.

Laura:

Sheridan agrees to cooperate.

Laura:

He orders Ivanova to search all the outgoing ships, slow down departures

Laura:

and despite mechanical problems.

Laura:

We've you've never done this in your work.

Laura:

Have you

Xhafer:

Site mechanical problems to buy time.

Xhafer:

If I did, I wouldn't be admitting it on

Xhafer:

podcast.

Laura:

I've I've certainly never done this.

Laura:

Um, . So Cranston leaves, but Garibaldi is feeling super sess about this whole thing.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

They, they, they know they're not being told

Xhafer:

everything.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

But, you know, you got to go along to get along until you

Laura:

have more information, right.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Garibaldi, knows where to go to get more information that he goes and speaks to Dr.

Xhafer:

Franklin.

Xhafer:

Who of course reveals that he studied under Dr.

Xhafer:

Jacobs at Harvard for two years.

Xhafer:

And he vouches for his character.

Xhafer:

Before being reminded that last time he did that, it went

Xhafer:

really well for everyone on the

Xhafer:

station.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

I, I really wonder also if Jacobs is the one that taught him to take

Laura:

patients back to his quarters.

Laura:

Requisition that spare caught,

Laura:

you

Laura:

know,

Xhafer:

hope not.

Laura:

I had a good laugh, but I really do like it when shows refer to other

Laura:

things that have happened in the show.

Laura:

you know, Garibaldi brings up the plot of infection.

Laura:

and I don't know if this is just cause he, we kind of grew up in

Laura:

that time where shows didn't memory.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Yeah, there was no guarantee that you had seen an episode because

Xhafer:

everything was built for syndication.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

And so they, they didn't necessarily.

Laura:

Do that self referential thing very often.

Laura:

because.

Laura:

It just didn't work for their medium, but

Xhafer:

People have no memory, they will not remember anything.

Xhafer:

And you can't expect them to, so you don't.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

They've made the leap to watching a genre show about

Xhafer:

a space station in diplomacy.

Xhafer:

So that must be enough.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

we, we do get to meet Dr.

Xhafer:

Jacobs right after this.

Xhafer:

And it's Tony Steedman.

Xhafer:

who was, of course.

Xhafer:

so crates and bill and Ted.

Xhafer:

He's looking for an identity card he's in the marketplace and a merchant

Xhafer:

turns him down because he wants it too

Xhafer:

bad.

Xhafer:

And so he has to leave and then out of the shadows comes Richard fucking mole.

Xhafer:

Richard mole is probably the most that guy of that

Xhafer:

guys.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

I know him mostly from night court where he was bull

Xhafer:

he's the bailiff in night court.

Xhafer:

But he is in hundreds, he's all over the place.

Xhafer:

Like just, just everything from jingle, all the way to, but I'm a

Xhafer:

cheerleader, he's just in everything.

Xhafer:

He actually almost had the role of gold to cot.

Xhafer:

I found out too reading about him, which is something I had no idea.

Laura:

Oh, my gosh, that would have changed gold.

Laura:

Ducat.

Laura:

But a lot.

Xhafer:

Yeah, I mean, mark Alamo is.

Xhafer:

Uh, How do I want to put this politely?

Xhafer:

Uh, a fucking creep.

Xhafer:

I don't know about him personally.

Xhafer:

I know absolutely nothing about his personal life.

Xhafer:

Uh, but the character is played like that.

Xhafer:

And I don't know that.

Xhafer:

Uh, I feel like, uh, Richard mole would probably play him a bit more

Xhafer:

as a strong arm kind of military guy instead of a deceptive kind of creepy

Xhafer:

dude.

Xhafer:

And we got, would've

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

different character.

Laura:

Yeah, mark Alamo was certainly unique and perfect.

Laura:

So.

Laura:

in the hallway, we see Sheridan.

Laura:

It's starting to get on an elevator, but he sees costs

Laura:

creeping around in the hallways.

Xhafer:

Yeah, he's straight

Xhafer:

up.

Xhafer:

Paul's a Garibaldi here.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

he goes to try to make some small talk where he subtly calls

Laura:

cash out for being secretive.

Laura:

And then when cosh.

Laura:

questions, why he would want to get to know him better.

Laura:

Sheraton calls him out for being on his dream and this.

Laura:

Is it streamed ship Stripe.

Xhafer:

St.

Xhafer:

I

Xhafer:

believe.

Laura:

Yeah, sure.

Laura:

Let's go with that.

Laura:

This whole little exchange was really hard to make notes on because it was so.

Laura:

Kind

Laura:

of cryptic.

Xhafer:

CAUTI.

Laura:

It's hard to make notes about Kosh.

Xhafer:

Yeah, I just wrote down.

Xhafer:

He said he listened to the song.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Which I assume was the chain.

Xhafer:

Because the chain is so good guys.

Laura:

So yeah, I guess Sheridan's thoughts became a song is kind

Laura:

of what he was getting at.

Xhafer:

We cut over to agent Cranston, who's briefing officer Kentucky,

Xhafer:

and the rest of the security force.

Xhafer:

About how they're going to use Dr.

Xhafer:

Jacob's COVID vaccine chip to find him on the station.

Laura:

Uh, yeah, so he's he got the COVID vaccine ship.

Laura:

They're using special scanners to find that.

Laura:

Garibaldi brief Sheridan on Cranston's whole thing.

Laura:

But as they're walking, Sheridan spots, a ribbon tied to a corner in a hallway.

Laura:

Which seems very analog for.

Laura:

This particular century.

Laura:

Uh, he makes it an excuse to ditch.

Laura:

Garibaldi heads to the cargo area.

Laura:

Where Sarah, who we identified from the credits.

Laura:

And your card that

Laura:

you

Xhafer:

the trading card.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

Uh, huh.

Laura:

It was apparently waiting for him.

Laura:

So her signal is too.

Laura:

Tie a ribbon to some shit in the hallway.

Xhafer:

I hope someone sees it in

Xhafer:

time.

Xhafer:

How long do you think she was waiting there?

Laura:

That's a good freaking question.

Laura:

Isn't

Xhafer:

Like 10 minutes,

Xhafer:

hour.

Laura:

She's just like, She's just like, in a cargo bay,

Laura:

just chilling.

Laura:

Okay.

Laura:

here's the other thing about the scene that I don't quite get.

Laura:

She tells him that he's in great danger and we go to commercial break.

Laura:

And there's no danger to share it in, in this

Laura:

episode at all.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

like the.

Xhafer:

He is fine the entire time we've seen Sheridan in great danger.

Xhafer:

And it usually involves being kidnapped by aliens.

Xhafer:

you know, take it up, taking something, a star fury out there to

Xhafer:

fight some shit that he shouldn't be.

Xhafer:

He is fine

Xhafer:

here.

Laura:

Yeah, she's just ratcheting up the tension to commercial,

Xhafer:

He could have been walking around this entire episode in his pajamas.

Xhafer:

And it would have felt weird, but not like, why are you wearing pajamas to this?

Xhafer:

Like you should be wearing armor.

Laura:

Right.

Xhafer:

we get the lowdown on what's going on.

Xhafer:

Jacobs is not a trader, but rather can prove that Clark lied about being

Xhafer:

sick to get off earth force one.

Xhafer:

Before president Santiago was killed when it blew up.

Xhafer:

Tshirt is instructed to get a sworn statement from Jacobs and to get him

Xhafer:

off the station alive, Sheraton tells Garibaldi who then informs Franklin.

Xhafer:

We cut to Dr.

Xhafer:

Jacobs.

Xhafer:

Who's recording a personal log before going on the run again.

Xhafer:

And he is almost out of Starbucks and things are about to get rough.

Laura:

I got a question for you is your fare.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

Before these last couple of years.

Laura:

Did you think that it would be bonkers for an investigation

Laura:

into a clear coup attempt?

Laura:

Against a democratic government to take so long.

Xhafer:

Oh, no.

Xhafer:

If anything, this might be more efficient.

Xhafer:

We're not even six months out at this point.

Laura:

Yeah,

Xhafer:

I.

Xhafer:

don't want to

Xhafer:

spend too much time studying this timeframe because it's going to

Xhafer:

get real depressing real quick.

Laura:

Right.

Xhafer:

Oh, no.

Xhafer:

Anyways, we cut to Gareth all these quarters and Franklin

Xhafer:

takes the chance to gloat.

Xhafer:

But he's batting 500 on personal references here.

Xhafer:

So maybe he needs to calm it down a bit.

Xhafer:

Garibaldi throws on a hat.

Xhafer:

Which I'm sure my dad actually owned a copy of.

Xhafer:

he calls it to disguise.

Xhafer:

Another classic homeschool security

Xhafer:

trick.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

I think he's right to say that people notice the uniform, not the face

Laura:

and that he will have a bit more.

Laura:

Anonymity down there and down below without his uniform on people

Laura:

will just look right over him.

Laura:

But I think he is wrong to say that that Devon Fidor is an excellent disguise.

Xhafer:

Yeah, a hundred percent.

Laura:

So in a, another hallway,

Laura:

Jacob's is accosted by the.

Laura:

Very tall and creepy man.

Laura:

We saw.

Xhafer:

Max we find

Xhafer:

out his name is later in the episode.

Laura:

We actually got a name for him where we don't get one for Sarah.

Laura:

He's got him pegged.

Laura:

He knows this person in the nice suit.

Laura:

Doesn't belong here.

Laura:

He quickly puts it together that he's running away from something and

Laura:

they start going through his clothes.

Laura:

They find the data crystal, and then they find his presidential pocketwatch.

Xhafer:

Hm.

Laura:

Which you probably shouldn't have carried on you if you were

Laura:

trying to hide, but It's fine.

Xhafer:

Yup.

Xhafer:

Agent Cranston is conducting the search and is convinced they have

Xhafer:

narrowed down the area to where Dr.

Xhafer:

Jacobs is to down below.

Xhafer:

But Sheridan makes mention of a heavily OLED filled area

Xhafer:

with machinery called downtown.

Xhafer:

Cranston jumps on this is all like, oh, you're a genius.

Xhafer:

And it's all poor it's weld on.

Xhafer:

Ivana was like, they're going to have to cut through how many

Xhafer:

doors did he's just like 47.

Xhafer:

It's just like, oh, Oh, this is going to take a while.

Laura:

I love that she calls him out too on the downtown name.

Laura:

She's like really?

Xhafer:

I mean, it

Xhafer:

worked.

Laura:

I agree though, could have been more inventive.

Laura:

At Corban calls right at the end of the scene.

Laura:

Until Sheridan that ambassador Kosch would like to speak to him.

Xhafer:

Yeah, this is a big deal because this has never happened.

Xhafer:

Ever cautious never said he actually wanted to talk to someone before.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Exciting.

Xhafer:

After this, Garibaldi and Franklin are in down below and they eat some

Xhafer:

Nutri-Grain bars and wax poetic about the promise of the future and never living

Xhafer:

up to what everyone thought it would be.

Xhafer:

Much like neutral gain

Xhafer:

bars.

Laura:

I thought this was really insightful.

Laura:

I was like, wow.

Laura:

He wrote.

Laura:

A description of how millennials feel about everything.

Laura:

Before we were even grown up.

Laura:

Like neat.

Laura:

So Franklin after the finishes is Nutri-Grain bars spots, the.

Laura:

Vendor from earlier.

Laura:

And now he's trying to hock that presidential watch.

Laura:

He's trying to sell it.

Laura:

Uh, it's funny that he was so smart earlier that he didn't

Laura:

step in the big pile of shit.

Laura:

That was Jacob's whole mess.

Laura:

But he got really dumb, really fast.

Xhafer:

Uh, watch from the president.

Laura:

right.

Laura:

right.

Xhafer:

I can sell that.

Xhafer:

Garibaldi just harasses the shit out of him.

Xhafer:

Until he gets the information that he wants.

Laura:

Yup.

Laura:

Good thing.

Laura:

You're not in uniform, I guess.

Xhafer:

Uh, Meanwhile, max calls Cranston and secure is a 10 K finder's

Xhafer:

fee For turning over the doctor.

Xhafer:

Sheridan goes to cautious quarters and they have atypical

Xhafer:

cryptic cosh conversation.

Xhafer:

Although he does get a real nice, never asked that when he's all like, what do

Xhafer:

you want?

Laura:

Yeah,

Xhafer:

But he does say it three times before cautious, like, Hey.

Laura:

That's offensive.

Xhafer:

Right.

Laura:

Uh, he tells Sheridan, he's going to teach him about himself.

Laura:

Until he's ready to fight legends.

Laura:

So I don't.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

it's very, very cautious.

Laura:

And down below Garibaldi and Franklin have found the kidnappers hide out.

Laura:

well, they're liberating.

Laura:

Jacob's gear bald.

Laura:

He gets himself stabbed

Laura:

because of course.

Laura:

And, Jacob's tells Franklin that max has the data crystal.

Laura:

So Garibaldi decides he's going to have to stay and get that crystal because

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

copy these files.

Laura:

We've got a big problem.

Xhafer:

Yeah, Dr.

Xhafer:

Franklin forgets the general harm part of the Hippocratic oath here real

Xhafer:

quick and just start swinging FIS.

Xhafer:

He just jumps into this fight.

Xhafer:

Garibaldi gets stabbed and he's all like got some fighting.

Laura:

It's those, uh, instincts.

Xhafer:

So they decided they're going to split up the party and track down

Xhafer:

the data crystal and also get Dr.

Xhafer:

Jacobs out

Xhafer:

of there.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

So Garibaldi waits.

Laura:

He's got the flunky tied up.

Laura:

Max comes back.

Laura:

Garibaldi gives us a really fun, dramatic monologue while

Laura:

he's also target, practicing.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

max gives up real quick.

Xhafer:

He's just like.

Xhafer:

He's so casual about fucking lethal force here.

Xhafer:

Just like this guy.

Xhafer:

We don't even know if he's armed.

Xhafer:

Right?

Xhafer:

Like he does not like he pulled a gun on Garibaldi and he's

Xhafer:

just shooting around him.

Xhafer:

It is horrifying.

Laura:

I wouldn't be surprised if this max is the kind of criminal that knows

Laura:

not to carry a weapon on him, because that's going to make whatever he's doing.

Laura:

An automatic felony.

Laura:

And so he just does it.

Xhafer:

He's got a knife.

Xhafer:

He's got a little knife.

Xhafer:

We see a

Xhafer:

couple of

Xhafer:

times, but you're probably right.

Xhafer:

It's

Xhafer:

probably different with a gun.

Xhafer:

Yeah, it's a small knife.

Xhafer:

So.

Laura:

That's a pretty small blade.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Just Garibaldi in this scene.

Xhafer:

Like if Garibaldi was a 20-something in 2008, he would still be dressing

Xhafer:

as the joker for Halloween.

Xhafer:

It's the vibe that I get.

Laura:

Yup.

Laura:

Oh, I, I dated someone who dresses the joker for Halloween.

Xhafer:

But like once or like a bunch.

Xhafer:

Because there was that one Halloween where literally everyone was the joker.

Xhafer:

And like not, not a great character.

Xhafer:

a hundred percent to try to emulate.

Xhafer:

but you know, you do it once.

Xhafer:

Okay.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

It's, you know, how did I get these scars or whatever, right.

Xhafer:

Like we want to see a magic trick, like, yeah.

Xhafer:

Okay.

Xhafer:

That was in a fun, important movie for you, I guess.

Xhafer:

One year you get a pass, but multiple

Xhafer:

years.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

For him, it's like a kind of a serious cost play thing.

Laura:

And there are lots of reasons that relationship didn't work out.

Xhafer:

Uh, and it's Cranston is pissed about, getting

Xhafer:

the run around and share it.

Xhafer:

And, it's just like, oh, okay, well, the doctor needs me by and

Xhafer:

talks everything over with Jacobs.

Xhafer:

They get the crystal, the password and they have a plan to get Dr.

Xhafer:

Jacobs off of the station., before these scanners kick in, because

Xhafer:

they found out that they could just use the station scanners.

Laura:

As we've done, I think at least twice before.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

Although to be fair.

Laura:

The last time they did it shared in a Garibaldi kept messing stuff up because

Laura:

they were having boomer problems.

Xhafer:

It's

Xhafer:

true.

Laura:

So, Sheridan's got a plan.

Laura:

We cut straight to Ivanova offering the internal scanners to Cranston.

Laura:

They've gotten it ready.

Laura:

In the background, Corwin is telling us that ambassador cautious, ready to leave.

Xhafer:

This part doesn't make sense to me.

Xhafer:

So, okay.

Xhafer:

Well, let's run through it real quick.

Xhafer:

And then

Xhafer:

I'm gonna tell you my

Xhafer:

gripe.

Xhafer:

So they go through this whole thing.

Xhafer:

They scan the station.

Xhafer:

He's not on the station.

Xhafer:

Right?

Xhafer:

Then cautious ship leaves.

Xhafer:

Right.

Xhafer:

And they're like, we'll scan the ship and it's all like one life form.

Xhafer:

Non-human cause it's the ship as we find out.

Xhafer:

Right.

Xhafer:

It's a living thing.

Xhafer:

And it's like, okay.

Xhafer:

Oh, well, we can start a diplomatic incident with the Lawns

Xhafer:

or you can give up the ghost.

Xhafer:

He's not on the ship, right?

Xhafer:

Why would he be on the Orlon ship.

Xhafer:

That doesn't make any sense.

Xhafer:

They've already scanned the station.

Xhafer:

And they've already told us that their scans can't.

Xhafer:

Like it does nothing on the ship.

Xhafer:

Right.

Xhafer:

Like they haven't even been able to scan it to confirm that it's a life form

Xhafer:

at this point.

Laura:

Oh, yeah, Ivanova said at the very beginning, we've tried scanning it.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

haven't learned anything.

Laura:

Okay.

Laura:

Yeah,

Xhafer:

Why does his ship have to leave the station?

Xhafer:

And go jump away with Dr.

Xhafer:

Jacobs.

Xhafer:

Then he could just hang out in the bay.

Xhafer:

And be there.

Xhafer:

This, the they've already passed the scan.

Xhafer:

And the ship

Laura:

huh.

Xhafer:

until after.

Laura:

And we know that if you approach the ship.

Laura:

It targets you with its laser with its ring doorbell.

Laura:

So

Xhafer:

one's getting in there.

Laura:

in that ship.

Laura:

Yeah,

Xhafer:

just leave it in the bay.

Xhafer:

It doesn't need to leave.

Xhafer:

I mean, it's nice to get a little bit of drama.

Xhafer:

And you could have the thing you could still do the scan and bay 13.

Xhafer:

It's all like, well, it's just ambassador costs your ship.

Xhafer:

You know, like it's the one thing we can't scan inside.

Xhafer:

And then they're just like, we'll scan it.

Xhafer:

You could still do the thing.

Xhafer:

I don't.

Xhafer:

I don't know, it's just like, it's already done.

Xhafer:

Like you've already scanned the station.

Xhafer:

You don't need to have him leave on the ship.

Xhafer:

You've already told us that.

Xhafer:

You've already set this table.

Xhafer:

know,

Laura:

Yeah, no I'm with you.

Xhafer:

Checkoffs non operable scanner tells us that this isn't a plot problem.

Xhafer:

Yeah, Cranston's past, he can't do anything about it.

Xhafer:

Sheridan rubs his nose and shit to commercial.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

And then we come back to the command staff, all entering bay 13

Laura:

after cautious ship has returned.

Laura:

The whole patterns are moving, which is a cool effect.

Laura:

I do like it every time we see that.

Laura:

And, Sheridan confirms the, to the ship is organic and the live.

Laura:

That's why it's registered a non-human life form, the ship reaches

Laura:

out and deposits a small package.

Laura:

The covering deteriorates and we see Jacobs in his little fetal position coma.

Laura:

They bring him around and he tells them that the ship saying

Laura:

to him while he was asleep.

Xhafer:

Yup.

Xhafer:

Sheridan meets again with his resistant agent contact.

Xhafer:

And delivers the data crystal and they arrange for Jacobs to

Xhafer:

be taken off to a safe space.

Laura:

Two things here.

Laura:

One she's very high on the melodrama.

Laura:

And.

Laura:

she tells him directly that he scored a major victory for the good guys, which

Laura:

might be the most suspicious thing you could possibly say right there.

Xhafer:

Right.

Laura:

If you have to tell me you're the good guys.

Laura:

I'm not so sure anymore.

Laura:

And seen.

Xhafer:

Yep.

Xhafer:

That's the episode.

Laura:

So now I am dying to know Jah fare.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

do you feel about this episode?

Xhafer:

Kinda mad about this episode to be perfectly honest.

Xhafer:

Like it wasn't a bad episode, but it wasn't a good episode.

Xhafer:

The stuff with cautious ship was kind of cool.

Xhafer:

Um, and there's yeah.

Xhafer:

And.

Xhafer:

I mean, as far as like long-term stuff like knowing

Xhafer:

what cautious actually saying.

Xhafer:

Knowing what, uh, you know, there's a little bit in there about what they

Xhafer:

look like under the encounter suits.

Xhafer:

And it's all like, you're not ready for that.

Xhafer:

And knowing that they're not ready for that.

Laura:

There is something that I was wondering is going to, if it's going to

Laura:

get referenced later, that Kosch says.

Laura:

I think it's in the first conversation.

Laura:

Sheridan asks him if that's ever happened before.

Laura:

I think he's referencing, you know, showing up in my dream.

Laura:

Like hearing the song.

Laura:

And he says, Kosh says once.

Laura:

And I was like, I don't remember.

Xhafer:

Oh,

Laura:

out what he's

Xhafer:

It's I think it's with the Len.

Xhafer:

I think it's with Dylan and the Chrysalis.

Laura:

Okay.

Xhafer:

the, The implication, but I'm not a hundred percent on

Xhafer:

that.

Laura:

Okay.

Xhafer:

also in things I didn't clock, but I read on the line, apparently

Xhafer:

some of the language Kosh uses is.

Xhafer:

Very specifically pulled from the,, short story.

Xhafer:

Childhood's end.

Laura:

Oh, really?

Xhafer:

Which if you were familiar with.

Xhafer:

Um, is a spoiler for what?

Xhafer:

The more lens look like.

Laura:

Okay.

Xhafer:

Um,

Xhafer:

I don't know.

Laura:

That's an Arthur C.

Laura:

Clark,

Xhafer:

Yeah, so, uh, childhood's end.

Xhafer:

Is a, this is going to be super spoiler town.

Xhafer:

So just fast forward, like.

Xhafer:

To maybe a minute right now.

Xhafer:

Listener maybe minute and a half.

Xhafer:

Uh, I'll try to get through it really quick.

Xhafer:

I'll just do the plot twist.

Xhafer:

So child's end.

Xhafer:

Ellen show up on earth.

Xhafer:

Make it a utopia elevate everyone, but refuse to let their pre.

Xhafer:

Like what their physical appearance be seen is right.

Xhafer:

They're like, you're not ready.

Xhafer:

You know, all this stuff, right.

Xhafer:

Like you just, you couldn't handle seeing what we look like.

Xhafer:

Just trust us.

Xhafer:

And then a third of the way into the book, it's been like 40 or 50 years

Xhafer:

and the aliens revealed themselves.

Xhafer:

And it's the fucking devil.

Xhafer:

Just like straight up, like every image of Satan ever, like the giant

Xhafer:

wings, the horns and everything.

Xhafer:

Right.

Xhafer:

Um, and so the viral on.

Xhafer:

Kind of using that language and referencing that, knowing

Xhafer:

that it's the inverse.

Xhafer:

With them is fun.

Xhafer:

Uh, Yeah.

Xhafer:

Also travel does end solid.

Xhafer:

Read it.

Xhafer:

Or if you don't want to read it, a scifi did a mini series

Xhafer:

of it a number of years ago.

Xhafer:

That's really good.

Laura:

That's like, that's one of the classics.

Xhafer:

dance, solid, solid a adaption.

Xhafer:

All right,

Laura:

Okay.

Laura:

But.

Xhafer:

now.

Xhafer:

Listener.

Laura:

What was the other thought that you said, interrupted you with a thought.

Xhafer:

Yeah, the rural and stuff is kind of cool.

Xhafer:

Um, It's just like.

Xhafer:

Kind of a blog episode.

Laura:

There's so many little holes in it for me.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

Like.

Laura:

Like you pointed out with cost or ship, like it didn't actually need to leave.

Laura:

We don't get the whole, any of the conversation were shared

Laura:

and goes to caution, says, Hey, I need you to do this for me.

Laura:

Like.

Laura:

That would have been an interesting, or could have been an

Laura:

interesting conversation to see.

Laura:

Like.

Laura:

We've had just a couple of cryptic conversations with him.

Laura:

How are you going to convince him that you.

Laura:

I need to hide

Laura:

this

Xhafer:

on your ship.

Laura:

From my government.

Laura:

Um, I've been told to find him, but I need you to hide him.

Laura:

Uh, there's.

Laura:

A lot of explanation there that goes just glossed over.

Laura:

And then just a little writing things like, like the you're in great danger

Laura:

when he's not in great danger at all.

Laura:

It was just like, we got to ratchet up the tension with something, you know,

Laura:

so I don't think it's my favorite.

Xhafer:

You know what I didn't

Xhafer:

check that I normally do.

Xhafer:

Who wrote this episode?

Laura:

Oh, yeah, that's very good question.

Xhafer:

Oh,

Laura:

it on the last one

Xhafer:

it's a

Xhafer:

JMS.

Xhafer:

Okay.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

I think we're in, I think we got one or two left in the season that aren't.

Xhafer:

But I don't think there are many.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

So, I don't know.

Laura:

I feel like it was.

Laura:

Not any better than average.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Um, um, it's a solid three out of five for me.

Xhafer:

Just.

Xhafer:

And it's only because the, uh, stuff with the Varroa and ship was really cool.

Laura:

I do.

Laura:

I do like the stuff we learned about the borderlines.

Laura:

It was very memorable for me, even though Jacobs himself, wasn't quite as memorable.

Laura:

all the stuff we learned about the ship and the fact that we had somebody on it.

Laura:

It's something I remembered.

Laura:

So it's kind of on the low side of three for me, but it's, it's an average episode.

Laura:

Of Babylon five.

Xhafer:

All right.

Laura:

But what is our next episode of Babylon five, going to beach affair.

Xhafer:

Well, the next episode on, HBO, max.

Xhafer:

Is season two, episode 14 and now for a word.

Xhafer:

The reporter arrives on Babylon five is a battle erupts and crew members and

Xhafer:

ambassadors give revealing interviews.

Xhafer:

I do

Xhafer:

make that distinction because this is actually different than the air order.

Xhafer:

Um, The air order had their honor lies as the next episode.

Xhafer:

Uh, but we get in now for a word.

Xhafer:

In this area.

Xhafer:

so what we'll be doing.

Xhafer:

The HBO max order.

Laura:

I remember this being a very unique.

Laura:

And fun premise for an episode at least.

Laura:

I don't actually remember much of the plot.

Xhafer:

Yeah, I like, I remember this episode happening, but I don't really.

Xhafer:

As far as what happens in it.

Xhafer:

I don't think I could tell you offhand.

Xhafer:

So I'm looking forward to watching

Xhafer:

it again.

Laura:

Me too.
