Transcript
Xhafer:

Hello and welcome to Who Are You?

Xhafer:

This is the Babylon five watch cast hosted by two former strangers,

Xhafer:

now, friends who have gotten to each other while we're watching a favorite

Xhafer:

show from the childhood, Babylon.

Xhafer:

Five.

Xhafer:

I'm Jair.

Laura:

and I'm Laura.

Xhafer:

We're gonna do a quick little recast because it's really the last time

Xhafer:

I feel like we can and then we're gonna talk about the trailer for the road home.

Xhafer:

So,

Laura:

exciting.

Laura:

Who are we gonna recast?

Xhafer:

Today we're gonna recast Kash and Mr.

Xhafer:

Morton.

Laura:

All right.

Laura:

Who do you wanna do first?

Xhafer:

I think Kosh is probably gonna be the most fun.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Kosh is fun and technically Kosh is already gone, right?

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

We see a von that looks exactly like Kosh at the tail end of this

Xhafer:

episode, but it is, it is not Kosh.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

We only have two Kosh costumes.

Laura:

That's the issue, I think.

Xhafer:

why there's only two war ones at any given time.

Laura:

Yep.

Laura:

We only made two.

Laura:

It's a lot of shoulder pads, so I I understand the expense.

Xhafer:

It is a 80 suit pants worth of shoulder pads.

Xhafer:

It is crazy.

Xhafer:

so for Kosh, honestly Think, I mean, you can get away with a voice actor for Kosh.

Xhafer:

You can get away with like two people playing Kosh, right?

Laura:

Yeah, for sure.

Xhafer:

can, you can pick someone who is older and might not be

Xhafer:

interested in wearing the body suit and just does doing voice work.

Xhafer:

And that is a hundred percent where I'm pointing with this uh, because I

Xhafer:

think that this is the perfect role to bring back a legacy cast member for.

Laura:

Oh, and who would that be?

Xhafer:

I think the best choice would probably be Walter Koenig,

Laura:

Okay.

Xhafer:

knowing that he can only do the voice work and stuff.

Xhafer:

But I think the most fun choice, and what I'm actually going to put

Xhafer:

forth is my pick is Bruce Slager,

Laura:

Okay.

Xhafer:

because

Laura:

voice,

Xhafer:

As

Laura:

we distort it.

Laura:

Okay?

Xhafer:

Because it's too perfect that way, like having, having him lead the

Xhafer:

new Sheridan along the path and be the mentor figure and stuff, it's too good.

Xhafer:

It'd be like Mark AML playing Yoda.

Xhafer:

It's, it's perfect.

Xhafer:

Like just, we don't need to fuck with it.

Xhafer:

It's great.

Xhafer:

Leave it

Laura:

Yeah, I like that there is a nice symmetry in it.

Laura:

We keep our, our boy Bruce working, you know?

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

I like it.

Xhafer:

What's your pick for Kash?

Laura:

Okay.

Laura:

So I was kind of on the same, same track as you in that like you can

Laura:

do anything to the voice, right?

Laura:

Because.

Laura:

It's supposed to be distorted, it's supposed to be a little bit electronically

Laura:

manipulated, like whatever, you know.

Laura:

So I kind of thought, well, you know, he needs to be rather tall.

Laura:

I think we need kind of a tall, imposing

Xhafer:

Mm-hmm.

Laura:

body in there.

Laura:

And then I was like, well, okay, I'm just, who, who are actors over six feet tall?

Laura:

I feel like we need to minimum six feet.

Laura:

On that.

Laura:

And then from there, all right.

Laura:

You know what's amusing to me?

Laura:

And I settled on Samuel L.

Laura:

Jackson because he kind of got into his like wise mentor kind of

Laura:

thing in the Star Wars franchise, you know, with Mace Windoo.

Xhafer:

That a bit too.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

Yes.

Laura:

So we could bring back the purple suit you know, maybe, maybe rock that a little bit.

Laura:

And he could just have some fun with it.

Laura:

And then we can, we can do whatever we need to the voice, you know, if

Laura:

the voice isn't working, it's not quite right, it just stirs some

Laura:

filters on it and we'll be fine.

Laura:

Right.

Xhafer:

All right.

Xhafer:

No,

Laura:

So that was, that was my pick.

Xhafer:

For morden, I'm looking for unhinged, yet charming.

Xhafer:

That can take a turn for downright terrifying.

Laura:

Okay.

Laura:

Yeah,

Xhafer:

And when I think of that role and actors currently doing their stuff,

Xhafer:

two names immediately pop into mind.

Xhafer:

That's Tom Hiddleston and Sarah Paulson.

Laura:

that's funny.

Laura:

I definitely thought about Tom Hiddleston.

Xhafer:

Yeah,

Laura:

Sarah Paulson, though.

Laura:

That's the name I'm gonna have to Google real quick.

Laura:

I see some credits in American Horror Story, which is not a thing that I watch.

Xhafer:

I haven't seen that.

Xhafer:

I know her most recently from the OJ season of American Crime Story or

Laura:

I see she's got the credit for ratchet too.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Okay.

Laura:

I could see unhinged there, perhaps.

Laura:

You know, I wasn't thinking unhinged as much with my pick, but I was thinking

Laura:

like, can have a, a smirky face,

Xhafer:

Yeah,

Laura:

gotta have a good smirky

Xhafer:

gotta have a good smirky face.

Xhafer:

Number one, quality of Mr.

Xhafer:

Morton.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

And you know, there's that classic sort of trope of at least in America, of bad guys

Laura:

having British accents, you know, we go back to our roots, make them the villains.

Laura:

So I was thinking maybe Benedict Cumber batch.

Xhafer:

Okay.

Laura:

Because he does have, you know, he, he is got some great hero credits,

Laura:

but he's also got some little bit more villainous turns that he's done.

Laura:

So I thought he might make a fine morden.

Xhafer:

Yeah, I could totally see that.

Laura:

Yeah, that's a vaguely British name too.

Xhafer:

For sure.

Xhafer:

Okay.

Xhafer:

Well that was our quick recasting.

Xhafer:

let's talk about this trailer.

Xhafer:

We have not discussed this trailer yet.

Laura:

That's true, like you and I personally have not had

Laura:

a chance to talk about it.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

So I'm excited to talk about it cuz I haven't really nerded

Xhafer:

out with anyone about it yet.

Xhafer:

So let's, let's go.

Laura:

it.

Xhafer:

So uh, let's refrain from any spoilers past this

Xhafer:

point, past this episode,

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Okay.

Xhafer:

easy to do.

Laura:

I think so

Laura:

especially because so much of this trailer is like alternate

Laura:

universe or alternate timeline.

Xhafer:

Yeah, we got the alternate timeline universe thing that was.

Xhafer:

I think we did.

Xhafer:

We either knew that or that was a theory posited based off the casting list that it

Laura:

Yeah, I think it was, I think that we, we posited that and then

Laura:

it became confirmed pretty quick.

Xhafer:

Okay.

Laura:

I have the official blurb up if you want me to read it.

Xhafer:

Please do.

Laura:

So the official about blurb when you just Google Babylon five,

Laura:

the road Home says John Sheridan unexpectedly, finds himself transported

Laura:

through multiple timelines and alternate realities along the way.

Laura:

He re reunites with some familiar faces and discovers cosmic new

Laura:

revelations about the history, purpose, and meaning of the universe.

Xhafer:

Okay.

Laura:

there's a lot there.

Xhafer:

There is a lot there.

Laura:

Life, the universe, and everything.

Xhafer:

yeah, it, the trailer starts off with, John Sheridan

Xhafer:

after he has left Babylon five which takes place in the future.

Xhafer:

This is all post season five stuff.

Xhafer:

So him leaving the station and going to Mbar and the Mumbai have this thing

Xhafer:

that runs off of Tachyons and he's

Laura:

No.

Laura:

No.

Xhafer:

to it and he's just like, tachyons.

Xhafer:

Oh shit.

Xhafer:

Having been warned by Zaris, if he's ever exposed to Tachyons

Xhafer:

again, that it's gonna be fucky.

Xhafer:

And so he gets exposed to Tachyons again and starts traversing

Xhafer:

time, space, and realities

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

trying to find his way home.

Xhafer:

There's a lot of fun, alternate realities here.

Laura:

Mm-hmm.

Xhafer:

I want to know what led to, there's one where they lost the

Xhafer:

shadow war, and Lando and Ivana are like having drinks in lawn chairs.

Laura:

Yeah, and I'm, I'm assuming they're on earth.

Laura:

Perhaps not Totally clear.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

why would Londo be on Earth?

Laura:

Don't know.

Laura:

Curious how he got there.

Xhafer:

Why are Ivana and alando of any character pairing

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

The whole thing reminds me a lot of into the spider verse, so I'm hoping that

Laura:

we see the universe where everybody is.

Laura:

Pigs like spider ham.

Xhafer:

Yeah, there's just all kinds of like random shit.

Xhafer:

It looks like the shadows attack Babylon five in season one.

Xhafer:

In one of these,

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Okay.

Xhafer:

in the old uniform and they're like shooting with Garal and stuff,

Xhafer:

and they're shooting up shadows and like down below or something.

Laura:

Yeah, that's probably reminiscent of that vision that Garibaldi had.

Laura:

Right?

Xhafer:

I

Laura:

That's, and I always wanted to know more about that.

Laura:

So I'm really hoping that we get some more detail on like how it transpired.

Xhafer:

Yeah, there's a lot of little stuff like that in this trailer.

Xhafer:

It looks real good.

Xhafer:

There is some end of the series spoilers at the very beginning, so if you are

Xhafer:

going through the show right now, And if not finished it and you're going

Xhafer:

through with us, I'm sorry in advance for that I would say it's probably

Xhafer:

safe to watch once we hit the start of season five is my gut feeling right now.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Okay.

Xhafer:

But it's hard to say exactly.

Xhafer:

We'll know more when we get to watch it in uh, well, I'll get

Xhafer:

to see it in about a month.

Laura:

I know.

Laura:

That's so exciting.

Laura:

Do tell.

Xhafer:

Well, I'm going to San Diego Comic-Con.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

I got a phone call a couple of weeks ago from my old college roommate

Xhafer:

who has started a board game company and they're like, Hey, we need people to go to

Xhafer:

Comic-Con and work the convention floor.

Xhafer:

You know, we've got a booth by, you know, like Marvel and shit

Xhafer:

or wherever, like on the floor.

Xhafer:

I haven't seen the map yet.

Xhafer:

I don't know what we're actually next to, but that's the area we're going to be in.

Xhafer:

And just like we need people to demo our new board game all day for five days.

Xhafer:

And I'm all like, I need like three hours off to go see the new Babylon five movie.

Xhafer:

But besides that, I'm in, so I'm going to Comic-Con.

Xhafer:

It doesn't feel real, even though my flights are all booked

Xhafer:

and everything at this point.

Xhafer:

Um,

Laura:

Is so exciting.

Xhafer:

yeah,

Laura:

what day would you be going to that premiere?

Laura:

Do you know yet?

Xhafer:

it, they haven't.

Xhafer:

Put out the calendar of when its stuff is

Laura:

Oh, okay.

Laura:

Okay.

Xhafer:

But it is the weekend of like the 20th through the 23rd,

Laura:

Okay, so I know approximately what days I need to be sitting

Laura:

here stewing in jealousy, right?

Xhafer:

yeah.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

I'm sure my, my, my, like my personal Facebook will be lit up with photos.

Xhafer:

I'll, if anything super cool happens, I'll put it on the Discord too.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Do please do.

Xhafer:

I have all those Babylon five VHSs from Ben's father-in-law

Xhafer:

right now in my basement.

Xhafer:

And I'm thinking I might try and get JMS to autograph a couple of them.

Laura:

That would be cool.

Xhafer:

Yeah, that'd be just a cool piece to have if like, I

Xhafer:

could get him to autograph my VHS of the gathering or something.

Xhafer:

I feel like that's, that'd be cool to have.

Laura:

be great.

Laura:

And you, that's a like a, you can shadow box that you know.

Xhafer:

Yeah, for

Laura:

Get that, get that out on display.

Xhafer:

Mm-hmm.

Laura:

Well, for the rest of us that don't get to go to ComicCon and

Laura:

see the premiere the release date has been set for August 15th, 2023.

Xhafer:

Just about my birthday.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

And I think you can pre-order it at this point, right?

Xhafer:

You totally can pre-ordered on this point.

Xhafer:

At this point, I think on iTunes and Voodoo and a couple other things.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Probably on Amazon.

Xhafer:

It's getting a 4K Blu-ray release, the whole deal.

Laura:

Yeah, that's, I did see that on the end of the trailer.

Laura:

I was like, wow, we're putting it out on physical media.

Laura:

That's cool.

Laura:

I like it.

Xhafer:

I'm gonna, I like all of my other stuff is on voodoo.

Xhafer:

I own very little physical and honestly the way all of Babylon five

Xhafer:

has been treated with this on and off and all this streaming service crap.

Xhafer:

I'm probably just gonna buy the 4K Blu-ray.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Be pretty cool.

Xhafer:

yeah,

Laura:

And I, I would imagine that pre-orders for this is a good thing.

Laura:

Like the more pre-orders that are out there, the better.

Xhafer:

a hundred percent.

Xhafer:

I'm sure this will be a, a sign as to whether or not we

Xhafer:

get a remaster re-release.

Xhafer:

If this does well, I'm sure we will get a physical media Blu-ray set of the series.

Laura:

Yeah, and it can only help our chances for reboot someday, I would think.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

And we can only hope they've got those animated menus that Yum Yu is so fond of.

Laura:

Indeed.

Xhafer:

All right,

Xhafer:

well, with all that said, we have season four episode six into the Fire Big app.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

One of the biggest of the series, Shirley.

Xhafer:

Yep.

Xhafer:

Jms, I think I've said this at the end of last episode two had said that if

Xhafer:

the season five thing hadn't happened, if they thought if they, if he knew

Xhafer:

season five was gonna happen at this point, the only difference would've been

Xhafer:

that this would've been a two-parter.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Otherwise it would've been in the exact same spot.

Xhafer:

Uh, He wanted to.

Xhafer:

He's like, you know, in real life big things don't happen on, you

Xhafer:

know, like the end of the year.

Xhafer:

Like, that doesn't make sense.

Xhafer:

Why

Laura:

Yeah, that's true.

Laura:

So,

Xhafer:

You know, it, things happen.

Xhafer:

You know, big stuff happens in the middle of other things.

Xhafer:

That's part of what makes them big things.

Xhafer:

So he wanted it to end kind of abruptly, kind of mid season, and he

Xhafer:

wanted it to be jarring on purpose.

Laura:

Yeah, and I think that he's also hinted in dialogue in a few

Laura:

previous episodes that just because the big thing is gonna happen

Laura:

doesn't mean the story's over.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

We've had a handful of characters say that now.

Laura:

Unlike storytelling up until this point where it's kind of like, oh, we

Laura:

fought the big battle and everyone's good and it's happily ever after.

Laura:

Uh, he doesn't wanna tell the story that way.

Xhafer:

No, he does not.

Xhafer:

So we open up on a antsy ivanova wanting to rejoin the fleet when Lorianne is like,

Xhafer:

no, this is the last of the first ones.

Xhafer:

We've just gotta wait.

Laura:

Mm-hmm.

Xhafer:

And then uh, Lorian describes Sheridan's plan, not as like in that

Xhafer:

terms of tactics or anything, but as a crucible to find the truth.

Laura:

Hmm.

Laura:

Interesting.

Xhafer:

Mm-hmm.

Xhafer:

Then like a space whale shows up.

Laura:

Yeah,

Xhafer:

I know that's not the actual ship, but Yeah.

Laura:

I thought it was like a wooden ship.

Laura:

It looks very wooden to me.

Xhafer:

Yeah, it, this is a weird little thing, but it's

Xhafer:

not supposed to make sense.

Laura:

yeah.

Laura:

These uh, first ones are all very like, impossible looking ships,

Xhafer:

Yeah, except for the one that's clearly an homage to close

Xhafer:

encounters of the third kind.

Laura:

Sure.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

We're not supposed to really be able to comprehend them.

Laura:

They're supposed to be mysterious and unexplainable.

Xhafer:

So uh, Could we cut to the white star fleet?

Xhafer:

And they are attacking a Roan observation post.

Xhafer:

The white stars successfully blow it up so that they can move the rest of

Xhafer:

the fleet past without being noticed.

Xhafer:

And man, this fleet is massive.

Xhafer:

We get a couple shots that really lend the scale to how many

Xhafer:

ships they've put together here.

Laura:

And the different types.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

We get a.

Xhafer:

Some lip service.

Xhafer:

It's over a thousand ships from more than two dozen races.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Impressive.

Xhafer:

It is a huge fleet.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Sheridan is very pleased to command Lanier to take us into the episode

Xhafer:

Yep.

Laura:

and go to theme.

Laura:

I kind of wish that the white star fleet wasn't just numbers.

Xhafer:

If

Laura:

to say that in the last one.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

I don't think that's very Mumbai, but maybe, I don't know.

Xhafer:

They've got a name for their one ship.

Xhafer:

Maybe that.

Xhafer:

Maybe that's the only one that has one.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

I guess in, you know, we don't know enough about like Minbar mythology to

Laura:

have any attachment to names, but it'd be cool if there were like some that

Laura:

were named like human things and some that were named minbar things to show the

Xhafer:

I'm

Laura:

melding of the two.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

You name them all after, well, what would you do?

Xhafer:

What if you, you're your tel, are your Ranger one, what do you decide they're

Xhafer:

naming all the white stars after?

Xhafer:

Make it a theme like all, all the good spaceship runs when you've

Xhafer:

got a bunch of the same ship.

Xhafer:

They've all got a naming convention of some variety.

Xhafer:

Usually,

Laura:

Mm-hmm.

Xhafer:

you know, like a big thing in the Star Trek universe is when

Xhafer:

you've got a class of ship, a lot of the classes of ship share.

Xhafer:

Naming convention, like all the Luna class ships are named after moons.

Xhafer:

What is uh, there's all of the Vesta class ships are named after hills.

Xhafer:

The California classes are named after cities,

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

the U ss, west Covina, you know,

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

And you know, you get a lot of um, named after people sometimes in naming ships,

Laura:

but that doesn't seem like a very maari thing to do necessarily, unless maybe

Laura:

it's like artists and scientists and something, but not, necessarily military

Xhafer:

I could see them going for like famous peacemakers,

Laura:

uhhuh.

Xhafer:

you know, like naming a ship, the Gandhi or something, you

Xhafer:

know, like stuff along those lines.

Xhafer:

I could see that fitting in with the, the Ranger theme as well.

Laura:

Sure.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

After this Elita is all like, so why are we defending here and not

Xhafer:

Centre Prime, which is clearly the more important world in storyline.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

And Marcus is like, well, cor sticks is choice

Xhafer:

as many people living on it.

Laura:

It's just numbers,

Xhafer:

Yeah, it's 6 billion versus 3 billion.

Xhafer:

Like the Centura ideally can handle themselves.

Xhafer:

Carry on.

Xhafer:

Six cannot.

Xhafer:

So

Xhafer:

we're

Xhafer:

here.

Xhafer:

So.

Laura:

He just hopes that uh, sari Prime can get rid of all their shadow influence

Laura:

on their own, which is a nice place to cut to Wado who's trying to do just that.

Xhafer:

He's got 12 hours to go and is just running around

Xhafer:

trying to get this handled.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

He's getting, uh, minister Verini all in a tizzy about how fast he wants things done.

Laura:

But I think maybe Minister Verini is just always in a tizzy.

Laura:

Yes.

Xhafer:

I would believe so.

Laura:

Status quo for this man.

Xhafer:

Delen passes along Yvanova's status and Sheridan

Xhafer:

confirms for her to come out.

Xhafer:

Delen is all like, Hey, did you wanna like have her hang back just in case

Xhafer:

Sheridan's like, I made a promise.

Laura:

Well, if deland had made the point, which would be a very valid point, that

Laura:

if something should happen to herself, I.

Laura:

And Sheridan being on the same ship.

Laura:

Perhaps we might need Ivanova to be in a more secure location.

Laura:

I think that's a valid point.

Xhafer:

that's why Zack's back at B five

Laura:

Zack is gonna take over.

Laura:

Well, Garibaldi too.

Xhafer:

President.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Well,

Laura:

We don't know where Garibaldis at, right?

Laura:

He's not

Xhafer:

Aldi's back on the station.

Xhafer:

I'm

Xhafer:

pretty sure.

Xhafer:

I think we, I think we find out what's going on with him now.

Xhafer:

Next episode.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Okay.

Xhafer:

Anyways Ivanova and Lorianne talk as she preps at Babylon five

Xhafer:

before heading out, and she's like, I'm kind of skeptical about

Xhafer:

this whole first sentient thing,

Laura:

Mm-hmm.

Xhafer:

And man, he's just like, he says she's leading

Xhafer:

with her mind and not her heart.

Laura:

Uh Huh.

Xhafer:

She reports that she's not on speaking terms with her heart.

Laura:

Yeah, and he's like, I noticed.

Xhafer:

Right.

Laura:

He tells us that his race is naturally immortal,

Laura:

but they can be killed.

Laura:

Right.

Laura:

But it sounds like they decided that immortality

Laura:

wasn't all as cracked up to be.

Laura:

So they made their later generations not immortal.

Laura:

So he says, he tries to explain to her that the shortness of life is a gift.

Laura:

And only races who are not immortal can believe that love is eternal.

Laura:

Like if you are immortal, you know it's not.

Xhafer:

right.

Xhafer:

He's like, it's the greatest gift, gift your race has received.

Xhafer:

The ability to believe that love is eternal way to be a fucking downer.

Xhafer:

Men would rather live forever to dull their emotions away

Xhafer:

slowly, like a rock in a river.

Xhafer:

Rather than go to therapy

Laura:

Nice.

Laura:

Nailed it.

Laura:

So true.

Laura:

So true.

Xhafer:

over on Cent Prime, Lando meets with Minister Ano, who's

Xhafer:

the head of Centuri Intelligence.

Xhafer:

This dude looks exactly like I thought you would tell me the head

Xhafer:

of Centura intelligence looks like.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Yep.

Xhafer:

Just, I don't know.

Xhafer:

I couldn't have drawn it, but when I saw it, I knew it.

Laura:

He's the guy with all the secrets and he looks very worn

Laura:

out about them, in my opinion.

Laura:

He's just like, Ugh, back on this bullshit again.

Xhafer:

Like old news.

Xhafer:

but,

Xhafer:

BT dubs REFA.

Xhafer:

Didn't kill Tira.

Xhafer:

It was Morden.

Laura:

yeah.

Laura:

Which was painfully obvious to everyone, but you.

Laura:

And Wanda reacts accordingly to this big revelation.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Peter acts the hell out of this scene and destroys all of the crew's.

Xhafer:

Lovely.

Xhafer:

Set work.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

How many of these shots do you think you'd get?

Laura:

You really kinda have it one go at it, right?

Laura:

Or you gotta just keep destroying props and set.

Xhafer:

I gotta imagine on Babylon five, this is a one shot.

Xhafer:

You don't get to retake this.

Laura:

You don't have a dozen VAEs sitting in the back waiting to be destroyed.

Xhafer:

Nope.

Xhafer:

Ivanova has let her do lingo streak go.

Xhafer:

But she's still basically a native speaker.

Xhafer:

Mumbar guy's promise.

Xhafer:

She learns all hell is Mumbai for continuous fire,

Laura:

yeah.

Laura:

She's just shooting at nothing into hyperspace.

Xhafer:

right?

Laura:

This seems like it would be a problem for most humans, right?

Laura:

These, uh, rangers who are in command of these ships, the human rangers they've

Laura:

gotta show some incredible restraint.

Laura:

In my opinion.

Laura:

I would probably be shouting a hell all the time.

Xhafer:

Ugh, Lorianne uh, is like, look, you're gonna have to un

Xhafer:

understand your way to winning this war, not fight your way to winning it.

Laura:

Mm-hmm.

Laura:

Mm-hmm.

Xhafer:

We learned Sheridan has hid nukes and a bunch of asteroids again.

Laura:

There's just no problem.

Laura:

A nuke won't solve for Sheridan.

Laura:

Right.

Laura:

So,

Xhafer:

This is the exact same tactic he used to defeat the

Xhafer:

one Mumbar cruiser in the Earth.

Xhafer:

Mumbar war.

Xhafer:

Like if it ain't broke, don't fix it, I guess.

Xhafer:

But there is, I mean, he does solve a problem without a nuke

Xhafer:

in this episode, so I can't quite give him the broken record wrap.

Xhafer:

Uh, This isn't Walter White and Thermite, but.

Xhafer:

Know, it's, it's getting there.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

I mean, you would think if you're other races, you might uh, Look

Laura:

for a way to look for hidden nukes at this point, right?

Xhafer:

Oh, we're fighting John Sheridan, the guy who hides in nukes and asteroids.

Xhafer:

Better not fly near asteroids.

Xhafer:

Morton is brought before Orlando.

Xhafer:

All healed up.

Xhafer:

They didn't make 'em put any loon for this scene, which was nice.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

We need to see this face, right?

Laura:

For reasons

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Morden refuses to remove the ships.

Xhafer:

Londo has morden's, shadow keepers killed.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Nice move.

Xhafer:

I didn't know that this was possible.

Laura:

Yeah, and I, I mean, if I'm one of these sari guards and

Laura:

I'm given instructions to just fire into the air next to the

Laura:

guy, I'm gonna have fun with That

Xhafer:

There's dudes behind him too.

Xhafer:

There's guards in the four corners.

Xhafer:

So like you're effectively asking me if I don't know, the invisible thing is

Xhafer:

there, I'm firing at the other guard.

Laura:

Oh, good point.

Xhafer:

Right?

Xhafer:

It's like mind bending, like.

Xhafer:

Okay, boss, like you're in charge and I thought you were gonna be

Xhafer:

better than Cartage, but here we are.

Xhafer:

Maybe it's just so status quo for them at this point.

Laura:

Yeah, for the, the lower centa, we just follow orders blindly and we

Laura:

don't have any independent thought.

Laura:

This is just how it is.

Laura:

This is what we do.

Xhafer:

He asked Morden again.

Xhafer:

Morden refuses again.

Xhafer:

Then Alando plays his hand.

Xhafer:

Blowing up the entire island of Saini.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

you catch, so they show us the island blowing up.

Xhafer:

Did it look familiar to you?

Xhafer:

I've seen this island on a map, perhaps?

Laura:

I did not.

Laura:

I'm letting my geography, whack of knowledge show, but

Xhafer:

It, it's Sicily.

Laura:

Okay.

Laura:

I kind of wonder cuz you know, the name Sini is very similar to Sicily,

Laura:

so I always kind of thought, Hmm.

Laura:

I wonder if that

Xhafer:

You know, and Rome and

Xhafer:

Italy and stuff, right?

Xhafer:

And then you look at, it, look literally looks like Italy and Sicily.

Xhafer:

Like if you freeze frame it and like warp the image a little, like

Xhafer:

it's, it's like drawn out in places.

Xhafer:

It's like they pulled two corners and stretched it out a bit,

Xhafer:

but it's literally just Italy and Sicily.

Laura:

That's, that's a nice symmetry.

Laura:

I like that.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Morton is thrown back into a cell after this

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

There's something special for

Xhafer:

oh, oh, yeah.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

He's got, he's, something's gonna happen.

Xhafer:

Ivanovo makes it back to the fleet.

Xhafer:

Just in time.

Xhafer:

The shadows and the VLANs arrive at the same time, Sheridan sends

Xhafer:

up the new steroids, getting both forces to attack Lorianne and Marcus

Xhafer:

kind of hectically trade places.

Xhafer:

Lita tries reaching out to the VLANs and we cut back to Centre Prime in

Xhafer:

what is probably one of the most iconic shots of this entire show.

Laura:

Indeed we finally get a nice thing for Vere.

Xhafer:

yep.

Xhafer:

Vere gets summoned by Londo.

Xhafer:

There's a gift waiting for him in the gardens.

Xhafer:

He walks out.

Xhafer:

Looks up.

Xhafer:

Then we get a cut back to, was it season, end of season one, start of

Xhafer:

season two, where Veer talked to Mr.

Xhafer:

Morden about what he wanted.

Xhafer:

He finally answered Mr.

Xhafer:

Morden's question, and he's like, I, I wanna wave at your head on a pike

Xhafer:

like this, as it's in the Centri Gardens to warn future generations

Xhafer:

of the price of power being too high.

Xhafer:

And he looks up, he smiles and he waves just as

Laura:

Just like it.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

This is just Chef's Kiss, one of my favorite scenes in all of this show.

Xhafer:

now we get the flashback.

Laura:

Mm-hmm.

Xhafer:

And I feel like the flashback is important in the

Xhafer:

non streaming era of television,

Xhafer:

cuz we're calling a very specific mannerism from a scene.

Xhafer:

Three seasons ago is a bit much.

Laura:

Yeah,

Xhafer:

But in streaming, do you think that this flashback exists?

Laura:

I don't think you need it in streaming.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

I mean, maybe there's something else like in the set pieces or in the

Laura:

costuming or expression on his face.

Laura:

That reminds you of that original scene or maybe even like blocking, like where,

Laura:

where he is in relation to the pike.

Laura:

But I don't think you need the whole flashback in streaming land,

Laura:

but for non streaming land, it's been, you know, years, right?

Laura:

It's been a couple of years since we saw this scene,

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Oh,

Laura:

so

Laura:

makes sense.

Xhafer:

At the big battle, Sheridan calls on the first ones to take out the

Xhafer:

Rolon Planet Killer before it can strike.

Xhafer:

Londo then meets up with Vere in the Gardens who has sent Word to the LANs

Xhafer:

with the proof that they have removed all the shadows touched from their

Xhafer:

world and vere's like almost all of it.

Xhafer:

You are still here, Londo.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Londo is very blind to his own part in all of this at this

Laura:

moment.

Xhafer:

the rish thing.

Xhafer:

So the VLANs arrive in orbit, they block out the sun, and Londo is

Xhafer:

immediately like, veer, you have to kill me and tell the VLANs like, just,

Xhafer:

here's a gun, shoot me right now.

Xhafer:

And veer is like, well, we don't know.

Xhafer:

Maybe, maybe you get a pa.

Xhafer:

And we know because of the other scene.

Xhafer:

That the VLANs having just suffered the destruction of their planet

Xhafer:

killer, have called for reinforcements.

Laura:

Mm-hmm.

Xhafer:

They don't know this but the planet killer gets up and leaves

Xhafer:

but not because Londo got a weekend pass for his shadow interactions.

Laura:

Yeah, so they've got a unfortunate Idea that they're

Laura:

okay and maybe, maybe not so much.

Xhafer:

After this, Lita gets all funky being taken over by

Xhafer:

both the LANs and the shadows.

Xhafer:

She takes Sheridan and Delen elsewhere.

Xhafer:

Elsewhere, of course, being the gray council set

Laura:

We only have so many sets.

Xhafer:

right, you've got one big empty room with a couple

Xhafer:

overhead lights installed.

Xhafer:

It's all you really need.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Sheridan yells at Frozen Lady Rolon while Delen gets Shadow.

Xhafer:

Friends.

Laura:

Okay.

Laura:

So what's the deal with Frozen Lady vlan?

Xhafer:

I think it's supposed to be one of the Centura prophetess

Laura:

Okay, that's, I thought that that's what it reminded me of at least.

Laura:

I just didn't know, like why,

Xhafer:

Yeah, she does that.

Xhafer:

Interact with like lady who was the Gel Barrett, lady Marella.

Xhafer:

Remembering that, right.

Xhafer:

Something.

Laura:

Yes, lady Marella.

Xhafer:

All right.

Xhafer:

Got it in one.

Xhafer:

I don't understand it though, like, Sheridan doesn't interact

Xhafer:

with this character at all.

Xhafer:

And you've already got like, Kosh, right?

Laura:

Well, maybe it's not a Centa prophetess necessarily, cuz the

Laura:

cent also have the lady Telepaths.

Laura:

Right?

Laura:

And we know they would've been seated by the LANs.

Laura:

Why?

Laura:

Why sinta?

Laura:

I don't quite know.

Laura:

Like maybe it's symbolic of their.

Laura:

Slipping away from the LANs.

Xhafer:

It's a good question that I haven't seen answered anywhere.

Xhafer:

Maybe I missed it.

Laura:

Yeah, it's one of those things maybe.

Laura:

Maybe it's out there.

Xhafer:

let us know.

Xhafer:

Sheridan asked the VLANs why they never attacked.

Xhafer:

Za had doom.

Xhafer:

They're like, you wouldn't understand.

Xhafer:

And he's like, bullshit.

Xhafer:

I nuked that bitch.

Xhafer:

Just like, come on.

Xhafer:

Delen gets read the dust jacket of the fountain head by Lanier, and she tells him

Xhafer:

to fuck off with that reductive bullshit.

Xhafer:

Delen brings up that the shadows and Rolan refuse to destroy each other because then

Xhafer:

the other will never know who was right.

Laura:

boy, I.

Xhafer:

This is the worst couple ever, like the worst couple you've ever met.

Xhafer:

That's,

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

The ones who should just get divorced already,

Xhafer:

well, the, they're like the couple that's dating that are

Xhafer:

perfectly miserable with each other,

Laura:

Uhhuh,

Xhafer:

like the, the two worst people you've ever met dating, you

Xhafer:

know, like that's what this is.

Laura:

I definitely can picture at least one of these.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Sheridan, Delen tell the older races that they're gonna

Xhafer:

take their ball and go home.

Xhafer:

The shadow planet Killer Cloud envelops the fleet as both the

Xhafer:

VLANs and the shadows appear on the bridge of the white star.

Xhafer:

Lorianne tells them their next words will decide their fate,

Xhafer:

and to choose them carefully.

Xhafer:

Sheridan makes them do our cold open, but they didn't prep,

Xhafer:

so they just sit in silence.

Laura:

Yeah, I know that feeling.

Xhafer:

Had to improvise that one more than once.

Laura:

Yeah, exactly.

Xhafer:

the Lens Lake.

Xhafer:

How can you expect us to answer when you've forgotten the game is over?

Xhafer:

They refuse to accept this.

Xhafer:

They're like, Hey, you can't get everyone to give up on our game if you're blown up.

Xhafer:

And the fleet surrounds them showing all races are in agreement.

Xhafer:

A handful of ships sacrificed themselves to save the white star, to let this

Xhafer:

continue going from various races.

Xhafer:

And then Sheridan tells them to get the hell outta our galaxy.

Laura:

Best line ever.

Laura:

Well, there's a, there's a lot of good lines in this show.

Laura:

This is a very good one that I enjoy.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Lorianne is like, look, I guided and then step aside, it's

Xhafer:

time for you to do the same.

Xhafer:

Y'all need to leave the galaxy to the younger raises now.

Laura:

Yeah, let's go somewhere

Laura:

else.

Xhafer:

they go out past the rim.

Laura:

Yeah, they just do it.

Laura:

They're tired.

Xhafer:

yep.

Xhafer:

Lorianne,

Laura:

shown up.

Xhafer:

all the first one.

Xhafer:

Ships that stayed behind and then all the shadows and four lawns.

Xhafer:

Lorianne tells them they now have stewardship of the galaxy and they

Xhafer:

must guide their younger races than step aside, as they have.

Xhafer:

Thus begins the third age of mankind has promised since the beginning of

Xhafer:

our opening credits in season one, the dawn of the third age, and John goes a

Xhafer:

little bit into the different ages, but there's actually a bit more of this.

Laura:

Okay.

Laura:

Do tell.

Xhafer:

all right, so.

Xhafer:

There is a source book that Mongoose did called Darkness and

Xhafer:

Light, the VLAN and Shadow Fact book, where all this comes from.

Xhafer:

This is from the Babylon five rpg that we should still figure

Xhafer:

out a way to play sometime.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

So the first age is uh, just you're on your planet and if you don't

Xhafer:

make it past the first age, it's because you never left your planet right.

Xhafer:

So like the zone that we hear the cent talk about Neanderthals

Xhafer:

would be an example of a first age species on earth here.

Xhafer:

The second age begins when you start exploring the stars and the universe.

Xhafer:

So space fairing races, second age races.

Xhafer:

So mankind has been in its second age.

Xhafer:

The second age is marked by the race falling under the influence

Xhafer:

of older, more powerful species.

Xhafer:

This process is unavoidable.

Xhafer:

It's very much like a child growing up, depended on its parents, like the

Xhafer:

parents teach and shape their child.

Xhafer:

The young race inheritance is cultural and technological

Xhafer:

characteristics of its elder.

Xhafer:

The Mumbai inherited from the VLANs, the DR learned much

Xhafer:

from the shadows, et cetera.

Laura:

Okay.

Xhafer:

The second race evolves and learns a great deal through

Xhafer:

its elder, but there's a catch.

Xhafer:

A child grows and must learn, defend for itself without its

Xhafer:

parents, so must the younger races.

Xhafer:

If a race grows too dependent on its elder, it loses the

Xhafer:

capacity to evolve on its own.

Xhafer:

When that happens, the race may permanently ruin its chance to mature into

Xhafer:

something more than a shadow of its elder.

Laura:

Hmm.

Laura:

Okay.

Xhafer:

In the third age, a race has rejected its elders further,

Xhafer:

further guidance and influence, and stands on its own actions.

Xhafer:

This is becoming a young adult, going out on your own, moving

Xhafer:

outta your parents' house.

Xhafer:

During the third age, the race goes through a tech technological boost.

Xhafer:

Since it's no longer bound to its elders rules this new freedom returns

Xhafer:

the danger of self-destruction.

Xhafer:

A third age race could exterminate itself with its new technological discoveries.

Xhafer:

There's a couple exist examples of this on here.

Xhafer:

It gives the mark cap as an example actually, and the Del Gar.

Xhafer:

For race to survive its third age, it must redefine itself.

Xhafer:

Like young adult aging, the race must keep learning and going through deep change.

Xhafer:

So deep.

Xhafer:

It practically severs its primitive roots becoming an entirely different species.

Xhafer:

The culture evolution is so hard that most races retreat from it.

Xhafer:

The fourth age is the last step for a race to become a full grown elder in its

Xhafer:

own right following the cultural change.

Xhafer:

The race has passed beyond its third age.

Xhafer:

See, oh, that's that's not spoilers.

Xhafer:

It gives the example of the Nars heating, kars warning and moving

Xhafer:

beyond their hate for the cent.

Xhafer:

If they're able to make this cultural change, they could possibly

Xhafer:

pass through their third age.

Laura:

Okay.

Xhafer:

Following the cultural change, the race has arrived in its fourth age.

Xhafer:

It is a fully grown adult species, free, wise, and powerful enough to

Xhafer:

shape the universe as it sees fit and walk among the stars like a giant.

Xhafer:

The Walkers of Sigma 9 54 are an example as the rest of the first ones.

Xhafer:

The fourth age is to many the last step of a race since they're now like gods.

Xhafer:

Fourth age race is powerful enough to fight any outside

Xhafer:

threat and wise enough to avoid killing itself with its own power.

Xhafer:

However, it could still kill itself culturally, if not physically.

Xhafer:

Should the cultural change of the th third age have not been strong enough,

Xhafer:

or should the races transformation not be deep seated and complete enough,

Xhafer:

then it will simply begin to fade when race can f fulfill all of its dreams

Xhafer:

it had when it was young and has nothing more to search and achieve,

Xhafer:

it stagnates and begins to die off.

Laura:

So did Lori's race self-destruct itself in the fourth age?

Laura:

If he's the only one left.

Xhafer:

well, he says that the rest of them left.

Xhafer:

And so I would say that's the, that's the fifth age race is after you've

Xhafer:

done the whole guide, a younger race thing, your fifth age is you are Let's

Xhafer:

see, a fifth age during the fifth.

Xhafer:

Oh, fifth age races are V lines and shadows.

Xhafer:

And Lori Ann's race, A race becomes the parent of the galaxy and the

Xhafer:

guardian of the younger races.

Xhafer:

And then the sixth age is out there beyond the rim.

Laura:

When you leave.

Laura:

Okay.

Laura:

That's a lot more ages than I was thinking.

Laura:

To be honest.

Laura:

I was thinking we'd have 1, 2, 3, 4.

Laura:

Hmm.

Laura:

I like that though.

Laura:

That's nice and comprehensive.

Xhafer:

All right.

Xhafer:

So those are the ages.

Xhafer:

So humanity has now entered its third age.

Laura:

Finally, it only took us three point.

Laura:

Two, five seasons.

Xhafer:

Back on Centre Prime.

Xhafer:

London refuses to be happy with their survival in the end of the war unless

Xhafer:

the universe conspire against him.

Laura:

I mean, I understand you don't wanna be too happy cuz you're

Laura:

gonna draw somebody's attention.

Xhafer:

For sure.

Xhafer:

And he doesn't wanna draw anyone's attention, which is why he's heading

Xhafer:

back to B five, even though he's prime Minister of the Centara.

Laura:

Yeah, he's just gonna do that from far away.

Xhafer:

just in case.

Xhafer:

Uh, There are people who think that, you know, maybe Yolanda

Xhafer:

just overthrew the monarchy.

Xhafer:

Maybe.

Xhafer:

Maybe that's not a great feel, not a great place to have.

Xhafer:

Not the best rep.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

It's puts a target on your back in a race like the Sari.

Laura:

Right.

Xhafer:

Mm-hmm.

Laura:

Minister Durran is gonna start hearing a lot of things.

Xhafer:

The white star fleet heads back to Babylon five and

Xhafer:

they discuss the future and.

Xhafer:

The first ones are gone and they need to make their own magic now.

Xhafer:

Their own legends.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

As per the age guide that we just read.

Xhafer:

Shadow Wars over y'all.

Laura:

Dun, dun, dun.

Xhafer:

It lasted 12 episodes.

Laura:

I must say in non streaming land, it did feel longer.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Well, you had a

Xhafer:

break in between seasons and like

Xhafer:

weekly.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

We had time to mentally stew upon it as we waited

Laura:

each week for more in info.

Laura:

But in streaming land, it does feel terribly

Laura:

short.

Xhafer:

quick.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

I want it to be longer if we live in streaming land for a reboot.

Laura:

And even if the who knows, there may not even be a shadow war in a reboot.

Laura:

Uh, but if it was, I want it to be a little longer, but I have a feeling that

Laura:

we're gonna get some more war anyway.

Xhafer:

Oh yeah.

Xhafer:

But before we get to that war,

Xhafer:

we gotta ask how you feel about this episode on a scale

Xhafer:

of Babylons one to five.

Laura:

Well, if we're going with your criteria from last time about what

Laura:

would I change aside from things like, for some reason, I don't know if it's

Laura:

iTunes or whatever, the audio quality is not great in parts of this episode.

Laura:

For me, that's just technical stuff.

Laura:

You know, we obviously have better CGI now.

Laura:

But like plot wise, I wouldn't change anything.

Laura:

So I guess it has to be a five out of five.

Xhafer:

It's the peak of the show, really.

Xhafer:

Like this is it, like this is, this is the, the big story that we've

Xhafer:

been building to the whole time.

Xhafer:

Everything else is aftermath of this and other stuff that's happened

Xhafer:

in the series at this point.

Xhafer:

Um, which is not to say that nothing important happens from here on, tons of

Xhafer:

important stuff happens from here on.

Laura:

Right.

Xhafer:

But yeah, this was, it's a huge episode.

Xhafer:

It's, it's Babylon five at its beak.

Xhafer:

It's five out of five for me.

Xhafer:

No doubt.

Laura:

Yeah,

Xhafer:

And

Laura:

I love this episode.

Laura:

It's got great quotables.

Xhafer:

Mm-hmm.

Laura:

It's got that chef's kiss of a scene with, you know, Morden and his

Laura:

head on the pike and Veer finally gets

Xhafer:

Gets to wave.

Xhafer:

Yep.

Xhafer:

Mm.

Xhafer:

So good.

Laura:

just I love that stuff.

Laura:

It's great.

Xhafer:

All right.

Xhafer:

Well, after this, we've got season four, episode seven, epiphanies.

Xhafer:

Earth prepares to shut down Babylon.

Xhafer:

Five

Xhafer:

Ster wants Sheridan to return to the shadow home world.

Xhafer:

And Garibaldi

Xhafer:

resigns.

Laura:

Oh.

Laura:

Buster's back, huh?

Laura:

That's kind of a lot Buster's back, baby.

Xhafer:

Sters back?

Laura:

I'm looking forward to that.

Laura:

It's not gonna, we're not gonna have a nice little, we get to

Laura:

rest on our laurels episode,

Xhafer:

Nope.

Laura:

which is what we were hinted at.

Laura:

So here's the payoff.

Xhafer:
