Laura:

Heads up listeners.

Laura:

We just wanted to let you know ahead of time that there's going to be some

Laura:

discussion of slavery in this episode.

Laura:

So just a quick content warning.

Laura:

If that's going to be difficult for you, feel free to skip this one.

Laura:

We'll see you next time.

Laura:

Hello, and welcome to who are you at?

Laura:

Babylon five.

Laura:

Watch casts by a couple of strangers now friends.

Laura:

Who are getting to know each other over one of their favorite

Laura:

shows from their childhood.

Laura:

Babylon five.

Laura:

I'm Laura.

Xhafer:

And I'm

Laura:

And today I get to ask your fair.

Laura:

What do you want?

Xhafer:

Um, I want to feel better.

Laura:

I know.

Xhafer:

it's, uh, it's my birthday

Laura:

know, happy birthday.

Xhafer:

Thank you.

Xhafer:

and my roommate got me COVID for my birthday.

Laura:

Really the worst roommate move.

Xhafer:

Now it's now he's, he's been, he's been really good about quarantining

Xhafer:

himself and have to take care of him.

Xhafer:

It's fine.

Xhafer:

It's it's, it's a joke.

Xhafer:

I'm not actually upset at him at all.

Xhafer:

and he actually made a very large apology about giving me COVID for

Xhafer:

my birthday to meet this morning.

Xhafer:

And I've never been someone who like, it's my birthday, whatever, like.

Laura:

It's also a Sunday.

Laura:

It's not like you're going to tear up the town on a Sunday night.

Laura:

Like yeah.

Xhafer:

Yeah, I was going to go bowling.

Xhafer:

I had kinda like set up bowling with my mom and my sister.

Xhafer:

And.

Xhafer:

Uh, my aunt and a couple of my friends.

Xhafer:

Um, in the area.

Xhafer:

We kind of like a low key, just maybe like eight or nine of us kind of a thing.

Xhafer:

because almost everyone I know.

Xhafer:

Had no someone or has had COVID in like the last three weeks.

Xhafer:

It feels like it's crazy right now.

Laura:

Sure does it, does it, it.

Xhafer:

To the point where I'm actually low key, kind of

Xhafer:

glad I have COVID right now.

Xhafer:

I think.

Xhafer:

because it means that I will be fine by the time star

Xhafer:

Trek, Las Vegas rolls around.

Laura:

Yeah, definitely.

Xhafer:

And in two weeks, And I'll be like, I'll have fresh immunity of

Xhafer:

the current variant for this giant gathering of nerds that I've been

Xhafer:

looking forward to for a very long time.

Xhafer:

So.

Laura:

Yeah, you'll be walking around with those fresh antibodies.

Xhafer:

Right.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

That good, good antibody.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

It's not too bad right now.

Xhafer:

I'm I'm low key miserable.

Xhafer:

Um, I've got a headache and my voice is hoarse.

Xhafer:

So.

Xhafer:

If, uh, I, I don't think I, I don't expect to lose my voice by the end

Xhafer:

of this episode, but I'm going to do more talking in the next hour than

Xhafer:

I have done in the last two days.

Xhafer:

So, sorry in advance listener.

Xhafer:

We'll see.

Xhafer:

When we get there.

Laura:

We'll carry you through it.

Laura:

We'll get through

Xhafer:

I appreciate it.

Laura:

I'm really, I was really sorry about the way this week shook

Laura:

out that we were going to have to record on your birthday at all.

Laura:

And then when you told me you felt bad this morning, I was

Laura:

like, oh, Oh, I'm a bad friend.

Xhafer:

Yeah, it's fine.

Laura:

Well, we'll get through it.

Xhafer:

Yeah, we'll we'll get there.

Xhafer:

so not a whole lot besides that.

Xhafer:

Um, I hope that I, I want to feel better.

Xhafer:

That's that's what I want this time.

Xhafer:

And I will.

Xhafer:

I'm sure.

Xhafer:

You know, and, uh, it's not it's that bad.

Xhafer:

Um, I had COVID in September of 2020.

Xhafer:

And that was bad.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

I don't know if I talked about that at all on pod.

Laura:

Uh, you.

Laura:

I don't remember if we have either.

Laura:

I know you've mentioned it to me privately.

Xhafer:

Okay.

Xhafer:

Yeah, I had it.

Xhafer:

I mean, I was not hospitalized, but I had two flags for hospitalization

Xhafer:

that if they had progressed.

Xhafer:

One half step further, I would have been hospitalized.

Xhafer:

My blood oxygen dropped to just about 90.

Xhafer:

Which is you go drop a low 90 that's the

Laura:

That's bad.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

And then I had a resting heart rate of 1 38 for about 24

Xhafer:

hours.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Which is crazy.

Xhafer:

That that beat me up bad.

Xhafer:

That that was the worst part of it to be perfectly honest.

Laura:

Well, I have my fingers crossed that Your immunity boosting and your,

Laura:

you know, this is a different variant.

Laura:

It doesn't.

Xhafer:

And I'm all Vaxxed up and boosted and all that.

Xhafer:

And.

Xhafer:

So.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Yeah, let's see how it goes.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

I mean the most I can do right now is just be good to my body.

Xhafer:

Hydrate.

Xhafer:

I made a ton of bread and soup stock yesterday, anticipating not being able

Xhafer:

to do it for the next couple of days.

Xhafer:

If it takes a turn, so.

Xhafer:

I'm well-prepared.

Laura:

All right, everybody think good thoughts for Jafar?

Laura:

This week.

Xhafer:

By the time you're listening to this, hopefully I'll be feeling better.

Laura:

I really hope so.

Laura:

So we're wishing for a job fair to get better.

Laura:

And today we're going to talk about.

Laura:

One of my favorite episodes.

Laura:

I'll just start spoiling the end of this episode for everyone.

Laura:

And now for a word.

Xhafer:

Season two episode 14.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

It's Dateline, yo.

Laura:

That's exactly what I wrote down.

Laura:

I said, open on a Dateline ISN intro.

Xhafer:

I have to wonder if this episode were made today, if it would

Xhafer:

get a more John Oliver style treatment.

Laura:

Okay.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Okay.

Laura:

I could see that.

Laura:

Or.

Laura:

You wouldn't get at like one of those YouTube.

Laura:

news station kind of.

Xhafer:

Yeah, a young

Xhafer:

Turk style kind of a thing.

Xhafer:

This is this very much feels of its time, much more so than

Xhafer:

most things in Babylon five.

Xhafer:

not counting the CGI.

Xhafer:

this felt firmly, like I was watching nineties news for a minute.

Laura:

Yes.

Laura:

I mean, this is smashing a certain button for me.

Laura:

I think that's part of my enjoyment of this episode is that I remember

Laura:

this TV from other contexts.

Laura:

It was a very nice.

Laura:

Melding of two.

Laura:

Things that existed in the world at this time, you know, we had our, our

Laura:

scifi show that we love, and then we had this sort of news style that was.

Laura:

Endemic everywhere.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

And there's a lot of that too.

Xhafer:

There's a lot of things that touchstone to our current reality in here.

Xhafer:

If you scrubbed a 41 59,

Xhafer:

Remaining in the episode because yeah, because HBO, max is terrible now.

Xhafer:

Um, I shouldn't say that they haven't canceled Harley Quinn and they still

Xhafer:

have a chance to not be terrible.

Laura:

This is your chance.

Laura:

HBO, max, you better pull it out.

Laura:

Okay.

Laura:

Tell us what's here.

Xhafer:

So this is the, space freighter that they're arriving on.

Xhafer:

Look at, in the top right corner at the space rear view mirror.

Xhafer:

And you will see a tree air freshener hanging in the window of this space.

Xhafer:

Freighter.

Laura:

Oh, my gosh.

Laura:

There it is.

Laura:

But it's adorable.

Laura:

I love it.

Xhafer:

They spent CGI money on that.

Laura:

I'm glad that we kept the pine tree air freshener into the century.

Laura:

That's that's an important part of any sort of vehicular travel.

Xhafer:

It's it looks like it's the, uh, the black ice one

Xhafer:

though, which I never understood.

Xhafer:

One.

Xhafer:

What that smell was.

Xhafer:

And two, why you would name something for our car, black ice.

Xhafer:

Maybe that's just cause I live in Michigan.

Xhafer:

And that's like a worry here,

Laura:

That's a genuine concern.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

The.

Laura:

No, that's great.

Laura:

I love it.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

So one of the things we find out at the beginning here is that we're

Laura:

midway through September at this point.

Laura:

In our Babylon five year.

Xhafer:

Which is.

Xhafer:

fast.

Laura:

Yeah,

Xhafer:

It feels like it's fast.

Xhafer:

It wasn't.

Xhafer:

Yeah, because the last season was just a year.

Xhafer:

Right.

Xhafer:

So we ended on new year's Eve.

Xhafer:

Alright, went into a little into new year's day and passed, but for the most

Xhafer:

part, season one was just that year.

Xhafer:

And to be in September with.

Xhafer:

Almost well, we've got six, seven episodes left.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

We're going to cram.

Laura:

A lot into that last quarter.

Laura:

Or maybe if, if we're sticking with the year thing, which I

Laura:

honestly don't remember if we did.

Laura:

But if we're sticking with a season is equal to a year.

Laura:

I think, I think the intros in play that don't, they.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Okay.

Laura:

So.

Laura:

we're going to have a busy last quarter on Babylon five.

Laura:

Cynthia torque, men is going to be our guide.

Laura:

Throughout this episode, she's a reporter.

Laura:

She had such an air about her, this actress.

Laura:

Then I was like, what else have I seen her?

Laura:

And I've got to have seen her in something else.

Laura:

And I, I Googled her.

Laura:

And, uh, she was a big soap opera actress, which.

Laura:

Plays well in this episode, but I.

Laura:

I'm not a soap opera watcher, so I couldn't really find anything else

Laura:

she'd been in that I'd watched.

Xhafer:

Did you look up any of the other actors in this episode?

Laura:

Honestly, I didn't do you got a good one for

Xhafer:

Oh, just you wait, we'll wait until we get there.

Xhafer:

You're

Laura:

Okay.

Laura:

I'm happy.

Laura:

I love it.

Xhafer:

So, yeah.

Xhafer:

Uh, we see the neuron and Suntory fight off the docking bay.

Xhafer:

We find that the specialist sponsored by interplanetary expeditions.

Xhafer:

Which is the same group that sponsored shitty mega man outfit in season one.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

And.

Laura:

We also heard that that's who.

Laura:

Sheridan's wife went off with right.

Xhafer:

think

Laura:

That she went off with interplanetary expeditions.

Laura:

When, when his sister came to the station, I think that they talked

Xhafer:

I think that's what they said.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

I'd have to double check that, but

Laura:

So they're sponsoring this episode.

Laura:

Good.

Laura:

I asked Erin.

Laura:

And like when I was making my notes, we always do our walk through together.

Laura:

And then I make a notes watch through.

Laura:

I asked him for his thoughts on ISN after watching this episode.

Laura:

Because you, and I know.

Laura:

That there's going to be more with ISN

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

So he, his read on it as someone who's never watched the show before.

Laura:

Was that, you know, ISN.

Laura:

It has an agenda.

Laura:

He's like, I don't feel like it's like our Fox news level agenda.

Laura:

Um, but the reporter comes off with.

Laura:

It's a bit of a muck Raker, a bit revisionist.

Laura:

so she's not doing total propaganda, but she asks a lot of really

Laura:

leading questions, which is.

Laura:

Kind of a slippery slope to be on.

Xhafer:

For sure.

Xhafer:

There's one of the, uh, what I would refer to as one of the classic blunders.

Xhafer:

In here.

Xhafer:

which is they make a point of calling themselves, the most important.

Xhafer:

News station in the galaxy.

Laura:

Oh, no.

Xhafer:

is not quite as bad as the thing that I'm thinking of, which is

Xhafer:

something that my dad used to say.

Xhafer:

Which given how hard he fell into conservative news media, I think

Xhafer:

is mildly hilarious in retrospect.

Xhafer:

anyone who tells you that they're the only person you can trust is lying to you.

Xhafer:

Is one of my dad's favorite isms.

Laura:

Um, oh gosh, I see the irony now.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Like, so he's just like, if someone tells you that you can't trust anyone else with

Xhafer:

them, they're the one that's lying to.

Xhafer:

You always no fail.

Xhafer:

And it's just like, Hmm.

Xhafer:

Building their ism.

Xhafer:

Getting there.

Xhafer:

All right.

Laura:

Neat.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

So , the, ship conflict happens outside Babylon five.

Laura:

She tells us they're going to spend 36 hours there, which.

Laura:

This is a hell of a lot of shit for 36 hours.

Xhafer:

Yeah, it's a busy 36 hours for sure.

Xhafer:

I mean when you get there and it starts with a fight off.

Xhafer:

Front of the station.

Laura:

Yup.

Laura:

We come back and the ISN crew is filming the aftermath.

Laura:

We've got medics running everywhere.

Laura:

We're in a docking bay.

Laura:

Cynthia tries to get comments from two very busy and very

Laura:

important people in this process.

Laura:

Uh,

Xhafer:

The wrong time to ask Dr.

Xhafer:

Franklin something, when he's treating people.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

He's in full triaged mode.

Laura:

And then captain Sheridan.

Laura:

also dismisses her.

Laura:

so we cut to Londo.

Laura:

And he's pontificating about the Narcan's.

Xhafer:

He just leaves it on.

Xhafer:

Thick.

Laura:

Oh, he's blowing so much smoke up her ass.

Laura:

That she's she looks like she's got.

Laura:

Sirius wildfire going on inside her ears.

Laura:

Like this is a problem.

Laura:

You know, he's, he's talking about.

Laura:

The neurons are violating the spirit of Babylon five.

Laura:

He's horrified the NARKN would put the humans in danger.

Laura:

Our friends.

Laura:

The humans.

Laura:

but there's a really masterful shot at the end of the scene where they.

Laura:

Pause right after split second, right after his statement.

Laura:

And we see his face.

Laura:

And you just know he's full of shit.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

And we cut to the car saying that Londo is full of shit.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Dzhokhar's calling bullshit.

Xhafer:

Has he's west winging through his interview.

Laura:

Mm.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

and then we cut to some more bits from a handful of

Xhafer:

characters we've seen before.

Xhafer:

We got our favorite dock supervisor.

Xhafer:

Hey.

Laura:

Edward Idelvion toes.

Laura:

I, and he reminds us about, by any means necessary.

Laura:

He says, you know, oh, we, we had some trouble, but Sinclair worked it out.

Laura:

and he seems happy and well compensated now.

Laura:

And I just

Laura:

love that for him.

Laura:

I'm so happy

Xhafer:

Yeah, we stand a labor union here on this podcast.

Laura:

Cynthia keeps doing her some interviews of regular people

Laura:

at next goes to Lieutenant Corwin.

Xhafer:

Who this is his name.

Xhafer:

This is when he gets his name.

Xhafer:

He has not had a name yet.

Xhafer:

Until

Laura:

Oh, really?

Laura:

I didn't realize that.

Xhafer:

Yup.

Laura:

Awesome.

Laura:

Uh, this is.

Xhafer:

so good.

Laura:

It's the best scene that this actor.

Laura:

Actor does in this whole show, I think.

Xhafer:

A hundred percent.

Xhafer:

so Corwin is getting interviewed and Ivanova is.

Xhafer:

In camera in focus, but in the background,

Laura:

Hovering just hovering behind

Xhafer:

Right.

Xhafer:

And he's just not like, no, no one's ever gotten angry in CNC.

Xhafer:

This is a very safe and good and calm workplace.

Xhafer:

And she she's just like nodding and smiling, just like, yes.

Laura:

Blink twice.

Laura:

If you need help, Corwin.

Laura:

He's just lying through his teeth.

Laura:

The scene for me, work of art everything's about, about it is perfect.

Laura:

I love it.

Xhafer:

If you skipped this episode.

Xhafer:

and are listening to this podcast.

Xhafer:

Just go watch this one scene.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

There's there's a couple individual seeds in here that I'm like, you got to watch.

Laura:

At least the scene.

Laura:

this is one of them.

Laura:

We cut to captain Sheridan's interview and he's, throwing some

Laura:

of those cheesy inspo lines at us.

Xhafer:

he's he's exuding, Dad boss energy.

Xhafer:

which is very different than dad commander energy.

Xhafer:

To be absolutely clear.

Xhafer:

Um, dad, boss energy is your guy.

Xhafer:

This is like your, your shitty boss who was trying to be your friend.

Xhafer:

You know, but like, it's just clearly a company, dude.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

And that's the fives from this interview.

Laura:

Sinclair was good at dad commander energy.

Xhafer:

Well, I think honestly, uh, and we'll talk about it at the

Xhafer:

end, but this is the episode we're shared and really, I feel like it

Xhafer:

becomes the commander of the station.

Laura:

Okay.

Laura:

I can see that.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

In my eyes and it's not in one of these interview segments, like

Xhafer:

this is clearly him playing the part.

Xhafer:

He knows he has to play.

Laura:

Yes.

Xhafer:

Um, because if he says the wrong thing here, yeah.

Xhafer:

If he says the wrong thing, he's getting replaced and he knows it.

Xhafer:

because he was placed there by Santiago, but with Clark's approval because

Xhafer:

Clark thinks he knows who he is.

Xhafer:

And so we've established that in all the conspiracy stuff in the background and

Xhafer:

the low key resistance stuff we've seen.

Xhafer:

So he just, he knows he's on ISA and he knows there's a billion something.

Xhafer:

People watching this.

Xhafer:

He's got to do these things.

Xhafer:

And he does it.

Xhafer:

Good.

Laura:

Yeah, he's

Laura:

walking a very fine line.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Totally.

Xhafer:

we get a shout out to former Senator Hitoshi in this interview too.

Laura:

I caught that too.

Xhafer:

Yeah, so he must be retired now.

Laura:

Yeah, she tries to throw Management.

Laura:

I'm saying that with quotes around it under the bus.

Laura:

So I'm like, is she talking about.

Laura:

Sinclair did a bad job.

Laura:

The committee did a previous committee, did a bad job.

Laura:

Former Senator had Doshi did a bad job.

Laura:

Like, what is her angle?

Laura:

I'm not totally clear on that, but.

Xhafer:

Well, it all lines up with Clark, right.

Xhafer:

And you know, they call it out later.

Xhafer:

It's it's jingoistic.

Xhafer:

Bullshit.

Xhafer:

I think I say that three or four times over the course of my notes.

Laura:

You

Laura:

can't not in this episode.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

We'll even share it and says that at one point.

Xhafer:

And I was just all like, oh,

Laura:

validated.

Xhafer:

right.

Xhafer:

Exactly.

Xhafer:

And it's just, it's that attitude it's, you know, Clark is preparing

Xhafer:

earth for a isolationist shift.

Xhafer:

And when you try to be an isolationist power.

Xhafer:

Owning and running the UN doesn't exactly fit in with

Laura:

Right.

Laura:

These two things are diametrically opposed.

Xhafer:

And if you want to cut budget for more warships.

Xhafer:

A good place to do.

Xhafer:

It would be to have this not be what it is.

Laura:

Yeah, you can't have the peace station.

Laura:

Sucking up some of those precious dollars credits, whatever we call them.

Laura:

this is also an episode.

Laura:

I just want to point out if you haven't watched it recently,

Laura:

listener that you got to watch it.

Laura:

You can't just sit there and listen to it and do something else because you get

Laura:

some fun stuff that pops up on the screen.

Xhafer:

There's lots of in the backgrounds like you have on your local news.

Xhafer:

You know, like someone sees a camera and a reporter there's people

Xhafer:

freaking out like and waving into the background of the camera consistently.

Laura:

And then the ISN folks also have little things that pop up on the screen.

Laura:

And one of them that pops up in this scene is that we've got the new

Laura:

Lloyd's of London odds on Babylon five.

Laura:

On their success.

Laura:

Success.

Laura:

So that's a

Xhafer:

Fucking Lloyd's still around.

Xhafer:

There's Las Vegas and new Vegas outs.

Laura:

I

Laura:

love

Xhafer:

Do you Vegas?

Xhafer:

Is on Mars.

Xhafer:

Per JMS queue.

Xhafer:

Uh, notes on Usenet.

Laura:

Obviously, obviously that, you know, Vegas moves to Mars.

Laura:

Of

Laura:

course.

Laura:

We cut to Dr.

Laura:

Franklin, who is being modeled in the very finest Alan Alder tradition.

Xhafer:

For sure.

Laura:

he tells us the story about when he was a kid.

Laura:

I think he says, he

Xhafer:

Oh, my God.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

He tells the story about when he's kid, he goes for, he goes on a

Xhafer:

rant about how terrible spaces.

Xhafer:

Like.

Xhafer:

At first.

Xhafer:

And honestly it gave me big star Trek, 2009 McCoy vibes.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

what a fucking story he tells.

Xhafer:

Right.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

He knew someone who accidentally spaced themselves.

Xhafer:

How do airlocks not have safeties.

Xhafer:

Like, I feel like if you're asking me to design an air lock today,

Xhafer:

With zero spacefaring experience and zero air lock design experience.

Xhafer:

The third thing I'm doing besides the two door, like it's

Xhafer:

door one door, two closed room.

Xhafer:

Like you've got cameras.

Xhafer:

You should be able to tell if the person in there is in a space suit or not.

Xhafer:

Before you opened the other door.

Xhafer:

Is there a living organism in here?

Xhafer:

We have this technology we can say yes or no definitively very quickly.

Xhafer:

No open the door.

Xhafer:

Yes.

Xhafer:

Are they in a space suit?

Xhafer:

I could write this with a Microsoft connect, a raspberry PI.

Xhafer:

And two hours of time.

Xhafer:

It is not that difficult.

Laura:

It's really important, actually.

Xhafer:

So important.

Xhafer:

How is this a thing?

Laura:

This whole conversation, this whole scene.

Laura:

I was thinking, wow, this is his story is really taking a shot at

Laura:

Garibaldi because we can count.

Laura:

Many times that Garibaldi has.

Laura:

Jokingly or, you know, some sort of threat to space, someone.

Laura:

Or throw them out in airlock.

Laura:

And Dr.

Laura:

Franklin is very traumatized by this and I've kind of makes me want

Laura:

to go back and see if any of these threats have been around Franklin.

Laura:

But.

Xhafer:

I feel like they have, and I feel like he got to give

Xhafer:

him a bunch of shit about one.

Laura:

Yeah, I could see it.

Xhafer:

I feel like there was one time where he was talking about spacing,

Xhafer:

a bunch of lurkers, and he's just all like, knock that the fuck off.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

So.

Laura:

he he's.

Xhafer:

rating.

Xhafer:

This episode.

Laura:

If there's any time to do it, it's now.

Xhafer:

Yeah, this story is terrible about just this kid.

Xhafer:

Getting air locked.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

And my son was like, Surely you do die instantly in space and I'm like, no.

Laura:

No.

Laura:

you don't,

Laura:

he doesn't believe it, but he doesn't have to find out.

Laura:

So it's fine.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

you would eventually suffocate.

Xhafer:

but you don't freeze.

Xhafer:

That's the thing that they get wrong here, his eyes.

Xhafer:

Well, they might've been frozen, so.

Xhafer:

The whole thing with freezing and spaces, temperature is a property of matter.

Xhafer:

There is no matter in a vacuum.

Xhafer:

So space would be avoid.

Xhafer:

Uh, true void is, is temperature lists.

Xhafer:

Temperature is not a state that had, has.

Laura:

That's wild.

Xhafer:

And so you wouldn't lose temperature because you it's,

Xhafer:

there's no matter touching you.

Xhafer:

To transfer the temperature to.

Laura:

You are the temperature.

Xhafer:

You are the temperature.

Xhafer:

Exactly.

Xhafer:

Now, given the story is like they had just kind of taken off from space.

Xhafer:

There might be enough like ambient atmosphere and moisture

Xhafer:

surrounding the ship still that it hasn't completely purged.

Xhafer:

I don't know how much of that stuff sticks onto a ship.

Xhafer:

and how far they were.

Xhafer:

We don't know how close they were.

Xhafer:

So theoretically, and also there could have been air in the air lock that had.

Xhafer:

When it purged, if it didn't suck all the air in and then open the

Xhafer:

door, if it just opened the door and what space do the work, then there

Xhafer:

would've been all the air there that could've transferred temperature to.

Xhafer:

but really you don't freeze.

Xhafer:

It's, it's a whole thing.

Laura:

Thanks for the physics lesson.

Xhafer:

Any time.

Laura:

Okay.

Laura:

So Cynthia reminds us about all the violence accidents, death things,

Laura:

people that have died on this station.

Laura:

before she comes to Dzhokhar.

Laura:

And some of the non population.

Laura:

That have announced that the Centauri were carrying WMDs.

Xhafer:

Don Don.

Laura:

That's why they shot the ship down.

Xhafer:

Yeah, he's look.

Xhafer:

Jakarta is totally sure Iraq had those weapons of mass

Xhafer:

destruction and there are 10 wants.

Xhafer:

An attack was totally justified.

Xhafer:

All right.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Oh, oops.

Xhafer:

Tonight.

Xhafer:

Did I say Iraq, my bad.

Laura:

At least, uh, these can, you know, there's debris we can scan, we can, we

Laura:

can actually find something theoretically.

Laura:

Oh, in the next scene, Cynthia tells us about there's a

Laura:

new office of public morale.

Laura:

And that president Clark, according to this office of public morale.

Laura:

Is becoming more popular.

Laura:

Due to his whole earth first.

Laura:

Thing.

Laura:

and then she introduces us to a new guy.

Laura:

We haven't seen this guy before.

Laura:

Senator Robert Cantrell.

Laura:

He's supposedly the new chairman of the oversight committee.

Xhafer:

This guy.

Xhafer:

Did this guy look familiar to you at

Xhafer:

all?

Laura:

know, he's got that.

Laura:

that.

Laura:

familiarity.

Xhafer:

From something we've watched,

Xhafer:

maybe something

Xhafer:

we've watched on this podcast.

Laura:

Oh, no.

Xhafer:

Oh,

Xhafer:

it's captain Bosch from Chad.

Laura:

Oh, my God.

Laura:

I don't know why I didn't catch that.

Laura:

Nice.

Laura:

Okay.

Xhafer:

I had to triple check.

Xhafer:

Cause I'm like, there's no way.

Xhafer:

There's no way captain Bosch is in Babylon five and our Chad podcast.

Xhafer:

I didn't call it out or maybe we've even dead and forgot

Xhafer:

about it.

Xhafer:

But.

Laura:

No, I don't think we

Xhafer:

It's like, oh no, I woulda, I did so much digging into these actors.

Xhafer:

I wouldn't have missed this.

Xhafer:

And it's literally like, if you look at his IMDV page, it's like Babylon five

Xhafer:

and shot are like the two top things.

Laura:

Oh, this poor man.

Laura:

Uh, Chad, it's the gift that keeps on giving.

Laura:

I know that you didn't want to watch it.

Xhafer:

And listener, I can statistically prove that you

Xhafer:

didn't want to listen to us.

Xhafer:

Talk about it.

Laura:

Oh, See, all those people that skip that episode.

Laura:

Don't you wish you had now.

Xhafer:

Don't it's.

Xhafer:

I mean, art at the Garretts find episode of our podcast, but.

Xhafer:

The movie is trash.

Laura:

NA.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

It's a, it's an hour and a half I'll never get back

Xhafer:

Yeah, you're right.

Xhafer:

He's thrown a lot of shade at earth, and how, uh, they might have

Xhafer:

a chance against them in Bari now.

Xhafer:

And then share it and just.

Laura:

Oh,

Xhafer:

pissed.

Laura:

Yeah, he's just such a jackass because he's, you know, he's like

Laura:

the new chairman of the committee, but he's like, man, I hate this job.

Laura:

Like, we're trying to make it work.

Laura:

It costs a lot of money.

Laura:

We don't need it now that our military is so strong, we can take on anybody.

Laura:

We don't

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Uh,

Laura:

Uh, and Sheridan is pissed.

Laura:

They must've

Laura:

shown him this footage.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

For sure, because he responds to it directly.

Laura:

He's called out the jingoism, quarterbacking.

Laura:

And I think there's maybe a good allegory there.

Laura:

That Sheridan is also calling him a draft Dodger.

Xhafer:

Hmm.

Laura:

Because he mentions, you know, Some of us fought in the war.

Laura:

and the implication there is that some of you didn't.

Xhafer:

for sure.

Laura:

So at the end of this, Cynthia, Kind of revises the actuality of the past.

Laura:

Bye.

Laura:

Reminding Sheridan, Sheridan references, the men Bari war, like it was lost.

Laura:

And she reminds him that we

Xhafer:

we won.

Xhafer:

the war.

Laura:

Bari surrendered.

Laura:

So I, it makes me wonder, like, is that her revising the past or

Laura:

do civilians legitimately not know how close the war was to being

Xhafer:

They were out.

Xhafer:

They were literally destroying everything outside of earth orbit, like.

Xhafer:

I don't think you cannot know.

Xhafer:

That'd be, that'd be like nine 11 happening and you not knowing.

Xhafer:

You know, like at least if you were in America, At that time, you know, like

Xhafer:

you were, you were cognizant of that.

Xhafer:

Just like any other attack on a country that I'm sure if you were

Xhafer:

living in, you would be aware of it.

Xhafer:

So.

Xhafer:

And there was no way you could know.

Laura:

This scene has another one of those moments, right?

Laura:

At the end, that is just a masterpiece to me.

Laura:

When Sheridan is clearly frustrated.

Laura:

With her lack of understanding or recognition of the full situation.

Laura:

And.

Laura:

That he also can't enlighten her

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Big mood.

Xhafer:

after this, we get a interview with Nova.

Laura:

Oh, God.

Laura:

She commits to terrible crimes here.

Laura:

This reporter.

Laura:

She mispronounces Yvanova's name and her as

Laura:

perky.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

Is there a great crimes.

Xhafer:

Uh, yeah, it's just, I mean, Personally.

Xhafer:

I understand so much.

Xhafer:

Out of it.

Xhafer:

On a very deep level.

Xhafer:

I understand having someone mispronounced your name.

Xhafer:

So terribly and just not having the energy to correct them.

Xhafer:

Just like, it's not worth the five minutes.

Xhafer:

It's going to take you to teach for you to pronounce my name.

Xhafer:

So we're just going to move on with our lives.

Laura:

Poor Ivanova porch affair.

Xhafer:

At the end though.

Xhafer:

She's like that can't be the whole story.

Xhafer:

And she's just like, yes.

Xhafer:

It's not fuck off.

Xhafer:

Chef's kiss.

Laura:

To move the story along.

Laura:

She tells us that the team is looking through this entire debris to see if she

Laura:

can corroborate the non claims at all.

Laura:

And then we cut to Garibaldi.

Laura:

We haven't seen

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

And like most cops he's instantly worried about getting fired as

Xhafer:

soon as he knows he's on camera.

Laura:

Oh, my God.

Laura:

Isn't that very telling.

Laura:

That the first thing out of your mouth, is that not confidence inspiring

Laura:

line that you're just trying not to

Laura:

get fired here.

Xhafer:

Man.

Laura:

Boy,

Laura:

that's a big mood too.

Laura:

Ivanova interrupts their interview.

Laura:

Thank God.

Laura:

to tell them that the sweep results are in she tells

Laura:

Garibaldi, she needs him right now.

Laura:

we get another sort of like mixing it up.

Laura:

Peace

Xhafer:

Cynthia goes to visit caution.

Xhafer:

It goes exactly as expected.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

But, you know what, uh, Erin pointed out in the scene, he

Laura:

was like, Kosh Nara, neck, huh?

Laura:

Like, I don't know that we'd really heard his full name.

Laura:

Yet.

Laura:

Because he, he didn't know it, you know, maybe it's something he missed

Laura:

in an earlier episode, but you and I know cautious, full name cause.

Xhafer:

it comes up.

Laura:

You

Laura:

know, We've seen enough, but.

Laura:

yeah.

Laura:

tries to leave his quarters and immediately backs

Xhafer:

just like

Laura:

That's

Laura:

great.

Laura:

And so she's really disappointed.

Laura:

Instead, she goes to torture Dolin.

Xhafer:

Oh, this scene.

Xhafer:

This is a lot, There's actually a little bit, uh, JMS has notes on this.

Xhafer:

Where like culturally, this is probably the most disrespectful

Xhafer:

thing in Ari culture.

Xhafer:

Is to like, Is to take someone like, cause they're leaders, like you don't

Xhafer:

even know who their leaders are.

Xhafer:

Right.

Xhafer:

Like they're their leaders.

Xhafer:

There's absolute trust in our leaders that they're going to operate for

Xhafer:

the benefit of all men Bari society.

Xhafer:

And they were made hidden in the populace to better understand

Xhafer:

the populace at a ground level.

Xhafer:

Is I think the idea, you know, like there of the people definitively.

Xhafer:

And that also means that they've never been questioned.

Xhafer:

Only by their peers.

Xhafer:

Have you, would you ever be questioned if no one knows if no

Xhafer:

one knows your gray council, right.

Xhafer:

and then you, no one would be able to be like, Hey, so why did we

Xhafer:

start that war with the humans?

Xhafer:

Like this would never happen in Ambari culture because the only people who

Xhafer:

would know you were of a position to make these decisions are also have

Xhafer:

a position to make these decisions.

Xhafer:

Or like your aides and your support staff, like the people who intrinsically

Xhafer:

have your back as their job.

Xhafer:

And so for like, I don't even know if the men Bari have like, News media.

Xhafer:

there's

Xhafer:

gotta be something you would think.

Xhafer:

But.

Xhafer:

Um, The you wouldn't be able to like, just interview gray

Xhafer:

council members on the MBARI news.

Xhafer:

Like this is not something that happens culturally for them.

Laura:

Yeah, because anybody

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

And so for her to just be questioned on the validity of her decision-making.

Xhafer:

It never, wouldn't never be a thing that even occurs to her.

Xhafer:

Culturally speaking.

Xhafer:

And so when it happens and she doesn't have answers, You

Xhafer:

know, She's just so shocked.

Xhafer:

I mean, she starts crying.

Xhafer:

Um, It is.

Xhafer:

And she, I mean, she tells you, you know, her decision was altruistic.

Xhafer:

She literally gave up a piece of herself to be a bridge between our two peoples.

Xhafer:

And it was like, didn't ask you for that.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

She's like, we might actually find this insulting.

Laura:

And.

Laura:

It's not something Dylan really considered because she's literally doing

Laura:

it out of the goodness of her heart.

Laura:

And, uh, yeah, it's.

Laura:

You know, they make nice for a second.

Laura:

And then Cynthia just goes for the juggler.

Laura:

It's

Xhafer:

right.

Laura:

It hurts.

Xhafer:

She gets saved by the beep.

Xhafer:

As she gets called to the

Laura:

Yep.

Laura:

There's a lot of saved by the beep in this episode.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

So we all get called to the council room.

Laura:

Of course, Cynthia is coming along.

Laura:

And Jakarta is riling up all the non-aligned worlds because he

Laura:

has heard the news that yes, this entirely ships were carrying weapons.

Laura:

Sheridan's wearing his dress uniform, which just fabulous.

Laura:

Whenever we break these things out.

Laura:

I'm always happy.

Laura:

I don't think there's a dress uniform.

Laura:

I like better than the Babylon five ones.

Laura:

It's my fave.

Xhafer:

I love.

Xhafer:

The uniforms that are coming.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

The, or they're not, are they black?

Xhafer:

They're black and green with purple.

Xhafer:

I think.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

I'd have to

Xhafer:

just, I just remember the cut of them being excellent.

Laura:

I like these

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Uh, when's your car's going off about the parts that are found in there.

Xhafer:

He does note that they found components for mass drivers.

Xhafer:

Which is.

Xhafer:

That we know those are bad.

Xhafer:

Um, they don't tell us what they are.

Xhafer:

Yet.

Xhafer:

I don't think they've told us what they are.

Xhafer:

but we'll definitely find out later in And the series, what they are and, uh,

Xhafer:

It is.

Laura:

I have a, a mass driver card in my Babylon five cards, I think.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

Gonna be a big thing.

Laura:

well, I was trying to be a pedantic jerk.

Laura:

By pointing out the weapons were transferred off the station.

Laura:

Like outside.

Laura:

Of the station.

Laura:

So it's fine.

Laura:

And he's crying about his sovereign rights.

Laura:

Like a little baby.

Laura:

this whole fight is just.

Laura:

Excellently paced.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

Everything is so like rapid-fire back and forth.

Laura:

these actors nailed all their spots.

Laura:

So they're trying to get the Centauri.

Laura:

Two.

Laura:

Agree to leave, try to figure out the situation, but then the power goes out.

Laura:

power flickers.

Laura:

We head to the outside cameras, which I do question how Cynthia's like.

Laura:

Wired into

Xhafer:

Right that.

Xhafer:

I mean.

Xhafer:

I guess the low key implication.

Xhafer:

And I didn't think of it until just now.

Xhafer:

Is that there are, I mean, clearly they're operating with earth gov support.

Xhafer:

Maybe that's something they were given as part of this trip.

Xhafer:

Was all like here, here's a console, like.

Xhafer:

Um, don't ask me how you got this, but here's a console.

Xhafer:

They'll let you see the outside cameras of Babylon five in case you need it.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

That is I can, I can buy that explanation.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Sheridan after this authorizes force and defending the station.

Xhafer:

As a fight.

Xhafer:

breaks out.

Xhafer:

There's freighters

Xhafer:

right now.

Xhafer:

right

Laura:

Oh, yeah.

Laura:

Yeah,

Laura:

that's it.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

We've

Laura:

got freighters fighting one another

Laura:

Nar-Anon Centauri.

Xhafer:

And earnings and tire readers are fighting each other.

Xhafer:

Uh, they send out star Fury's to try and calm them down and be like, knock it off.

Xhafer:

And then they fire and Sheridan says we've got to defend the

Xhafer:

occupants of the station.

Xhafer:

And the star Fury's disable a handful of the centaurian hardships.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

notably our star fairies are firing only at weapons and engines.

Laura:

We're not trying to kill anybody.

Laura:

We're just trying to disable everybody.

Laura:

. And, we throw everybody in the brig.

Laura:

after they surrender.

Xhafer:

After this, we get an interview with your car,

Xhafer:

explaining the Suntory occupation.

Xhafer:

And fuck.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

this is heavy.

Laura:

I think this is the most details we've gotten

Laura:

on it.

Laura:

We've had vague illusions.

Laura:

Prior.

Laura:

but now we get a personal story

Laura:

attached to it.

Xhafer:

We get such a personal story in such details.

Xhafer:

Given Dzhokhar's kind of, emo, I have to wonder if this is falsified.

Laura:

Really.

Xhafer:

would not.

Xhafer:

I would not be surprised either way to be perfectly honest.

Xhafer:

But your car knows the power of propaganda.

Xhafer:

He knows what he's on.

Xhafer:

He knows he's on ISS and he knows that this is how you get the

Xhafer:

humans to help you in your war, is something he's been trying to do.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

He, he does tie it to the humans

Xhafer:

He ties it to the humans In two ways.

Xhafer:

So he talks about slavery and he does make it sound like.

Xhafer:

Like he could have watched.

Xhafer:

You know, like something terrible, like birth of a nation or something.

Xhafer:

And come up with this story.

Xhafer:

Very easily.

Xhafer:

for what slavery was like on earth.

Xhafer:

And then also he says, you know, never again, which is of course,

Xhafer:

reference to the Holocaust.

Xhafer:

and so just like to do those things, to kind of tap into the human Zeit

Xhafer:

Geist and their experiences of slavery.

Xhafer:

So specifically.

Xhafer:

You know, it seems.

Xhafer:

It seems almost too convenient.

Xhafer:

To me.

Xhafer:

not that.

Xhafer:

I T I cast no doubt on Dzhokhar's suffering at the hands of Centauri, the

Xhafer:

suffering of his family, the suffering of his people during the occupation.

Xhafer:

All of that I a hundred percent believe is true.

Xhafer:

They were clearly.

Xhafer:

Enslaving the NARKN.

Xhafer:

It's clearly part of their culture that they don't even care about it.

Xhafer:

you know, all of these things happened, but this specific story.

Xhafer:

Just seems a little bit.

Xhafer:

To clean for human audiences on what would be a relatable.

Xhafer:

Experience based off of earth history.

Laura:

It is a very convenient story.

Laura:

You know, I, I wouldn't be surprised.

Laura:

If it's one of those situations where in his mind.

Laura:

He has adapted someone else's story for a quick elevator pitch.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

Too.

Laura:

Uh, species about why we need your

Laura:

help.

Laura:

a totally

Laura:

believable

Laura:

idea.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

And even if it's not a hundred percent true, it could be 75% true.

Xhafer:

still.

Xhafer:

Still check out with everything.

Xhafer:

I should have Googled if this was actually true, because it's probably

Xhafer:

a known detail at this point.

Laura:

Oh, surely surely that there's a use

Laura:

net or a.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

Uh,

Laura:

note somewhere.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

I didn't see anything from JMS saying that hit your car, made it up, but that

Xhafer:

doesn't mean that it's not somewhere else.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

And the, the story itself is, you know, Basically.

Laura:

His family was serving in a household of Centauri household.

Laura:

His father spilled hot Jola on the most important lady in the house.

Laura:

And got murdered for it, which is a kind of story that, Has a

Laura:

lot of truth

Xhafer:

Not just

Xhafer:

murder was Hong.

Xhafer:

And in a tree.

Xhafer:

You know, in the yard.

Xhafer:

For everyone to see like, That's very specific imagery.

Xhafer:

Relating to slavery in the American south.

Laura:

Yeah, it's a very parallel story.

Laura:

And, you know, after that, Dzhokhar became a resistance fighter.

Laura:

He says he killed his first Centauri the next day, but he

Laura:

doesn't give us any deets on that.

Laura:

Um, so that's conveniently.

Laura:

Less detailed.

Laura:

Cynthia asked him why NARKN.

Laura:

And Shakara just goes into that story about colonization, you know?

Laura:

this is the same thing that happened on your world.

Laura:

Between yourselves.

Laura:

And I think.

Laura:

Sort of conveniently, Cynthia also asks, are you guys losing.

Laura:

Uh, you, you seem to be just holding things and

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

six out of the seven last

Laura:

battles.

Laura:

Um,

Xhafer:

going well, just, just throwing that out there.

Laura:

Just stirring that pot a little bit.

Laura:

And you know, it sort of gives Dzhokhar some like fire under

Laura:

his belly to do something

Laura:

on camera.

Laura:

Almost.

Laura:

We get to do the whole, both sides thing.

Laura:

And hear from Londo.

Xhafer:

Yep.

Xhafer:

And he's just like, I don't know occupations a strong word.

Xhafer:

I'd call it a tea party.

Xhafer:

Um, we were there.

Xhafer:

We helped an army, gave him all kinds of technology, just like we gave you humans.

Xhafer:

You know is really the same situation.

Xhafer:

It was with the humans and you guys didn't suffer.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

to just be the Nard, right?

Laura:

He uses the word civilized, which I have very strong feelings about.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

Coming from, you know, the area of Oklahoma that was settled by settled.

Laura:

by the five civilized tribes.

Laura:

Uh,

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

I have strong feelings about that word.

Laura:

So.

Laura:

Yeah, his whole deal is.

Laura:

Despicable in this.

Laura:

he says that this entire he left because it was too costly to be there.

Laura:

Which.

Laura:

If you're being attacked all the time, that does sound costly.

Laura:

Doesn't it?

Laura:

Yeah, he does some really cool mental gymnastics in this whole thing.

Laura:

Especially when he reminds Cynthia that the Narins are the ones who declared war.

Laura:

After he himself ordered the murder of tens of thousands of thorns.

Xhafer:

Right.

Laura:

But they declared war on.

Laura:

Us.

Laura:

You

Laura:

remember that?

Laura:

Right?

Laura:

Right.

Xhafer:

surrendered, right.

Laura:

Just wild cognitive dissonance.

Xhafer:

Yup.

Laura:

that.

Laura:

We just want peace.

Laura:

Just

Laura:

wild.

Xhafer:

Yeah, and oh, by the way, we're such good guys.

Xhafer:

We sent a battle cruiser to the station are gonna force a siege.

Xhafer:

Until

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

our ships.

Laura:

Yeah, in CNC.

Laura:

Uh, jumped point comes up close to the station.

Laura:

It turns out it's the Centauri and Mondo.

Laura:

Calls up on the TV and, you know, issues, his threats.

Laura:

The sitar cruiser is going to blockade us.

Laura:

We're not going to let anybody

Laura:

in or out.

Xhafer:

Yup.

Xhafer:

after this

Xhafer:

week, commercial.

Xhafer:

So they actually got the FCC pretty upset At this.

Laura:

Really.

Xhafer:

so at the end of the Sycor ad, There is a subliminal message.

Laura:

Yep.

Laura:

It's pretty, you know, we want it to be seen.

Laura:

So it's pretty

Laura:

obvious, I think.

Laura:

Or at least it is on our HBO max

Laura:

TVs.

Xhafer:

Yup.

Xhafer:

I mean, modern television and modern frame rates help because it probably doubled.

Xhafer:

Um, when you, when you digitally upscale.

Xhafer:

To 10 ADP.

Xhafer:

From the source.

Xhafer:

Uh, you double the amount of frames that exist.

Xhafer:

So originally.

Laura:

it a

Laura:

little longer.

Xhafer:

I think it did.

Xhafer:

I think a doubled the subliminal messages length to be perfectly honest.

Xhafer:

At least a double D from four frames to eight frames, it was visible of the scene.

Laura:

Okay.

Xhafer:

the FCC at the time, defined it's a little messages, two frames or less.

Laura:

Okay.

Xhafer:

Um, so.

Xhafer:

Chairman's got very matter of fact, I'm like he clearly had a lawyer.

Xhafer:

Look into the rules and just barely broke, like did not break them.

Xhafer:

Just barely followed them.

Xhafer:

To not get in trouble, but the FCC was pissed.

Xhafer:

There was a little bit of commotion about the airing of subliminal message.

Laura:

That's crazy.

Laura:

I mean, I think this whole scene is great.

Laura:

Sycor flavor.

Laura:

Like.

Laura:

I mean.

Laura:

For one thing, this commercial is so, so nineties, like everything in this house

Laura:

and everything about these people, they're just so nineties, but, We just get this

Laura:

flavor of what psych war propaganda is.

Laura:

Like.

Laura:

And we've kind of had some of that flavor from our telepaths

Laura:

that have been on the show.

Laura:

But

Laura:

this is a little more world-building flavor.

Laura:

And.

Laura:

just like the Sycor is everywhere for your convenience.

Laura:

We're even in the children's hospital.

Laura:

Like that's just.

Xhafer:

Right.

Laura:

Uh, nightmarish wine delivered with a smile.

Laura:

Yeah, I love this scene.

Laura:

So this is the other one that I was thinking of when you were like, just

Laura:

watch this scene at least this one, too.

Laura:

got to watch

Laura:

this

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

So, uh, we cut back to everyone leaving the council chambers,

Xhafer:

and it's just ominous as fuck.

Xhafer:

We don't get to see what happened in there.

Xhafer:

Like off-camera, it was clear that Sheridan banned them

Xhafer:

from the council chambers.

Xhafer:

And then later they're all like, you know, after some aggressive

Xhafer:

negotiations, we were able to film again in these council chambers when they

Xhafer:

go back later.

Xhafer:

And so it was clear that they were just, no, get the fuck out.

Xhafer:

We're actually doing diplomacy here.

Xhafer:

We

Laura:

You're making this worse.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Please get out.

Laura:

Sheridan says everybody's still talking.

Laura:

But.

Laura:

Dzhokhar.

Laura:

Comes in and says, now you can see.

Laura:

This entire

Laura:

year I met us.

Xhafer:

And we're going to do something about it.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Uh, some vague threats.

Xhafer:

dun duh.

Laura:

And of course, this is a great time for Senator contrail

Laura:

the button with his 2 cents and be like, see, I told you this was

Laura:

just a big hassle.

Xhafer:

And it lets us know torque mins, one of

Xhafer:

the good ones too.

Xhafer:

We can trust

Laura:

gross.

Xhafer:

Right.

Laura:

So gross.

Xhafer:

Uh,

Laura:

so back at CNC, Sheridan activates that defense grid that we

Laura:

got installed in grupos I believe.

Xhafer:

Yep.

Laura:

And issue some threats to this interi worship.

Laura:

He's pretty certain they're bluffing because the Centauri

Laura:

kinda have a lot of bark and a little bit less bites sometimes.

Laura:

He tests their bluff by autopiloting a shuttle out.

Laura:

They're going to go past and presumably go through the jump gate or something.

Laura:

So they make it past.

Laura:

And Terry cruiser does

Laura:

not

Laura:

shoot.

Xhafer:

Yep.

Xhafer:

Everyone.

Xhafer:

Cheers.

Laura:

then it calls them to

Laura:

talk.

Xhafer:

Yup.

Xhafer:

so just as soon as they call the talk.

Xhafer:

non cruiser comes in and just starts blasting.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

The non destroy this entire tree, and then explode, trying to escape.

Laura:

it's mutual destruction here.

Laura:

So, uh, I think somebody references hundreds of lives lost.

Laura:

Cynthia does maybe in her wrap-up here.

Laura:

You know, then she goes back and she asks all of our main characters.

Laura:

That we've talked to, you know, is this still worth.

Laura:

It.

Laura:

Overwhelmingly the answer is yes,

Laura:

. Xhafer: Yeah.

Laura:

Everyone says yes.

Laura:

In varying degrees.

Laura:

Dzhokhar doesn't

Xhafer:

Yeah, Dzhokhar's a little apprehensive, but he's also

Xhafer:

just playing the hand right now.

Xhafer:

He's like, I don't know the human's going to join the war.

Laura:

Wondo tries to frame that Sentara blockade as peaceful protest.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

In . His, Dillon extols, the virtues of communities.

Laura:

Senator contrail is just a Dick.

Laura:

And Sheridan says yes, because Babylon five needs to create peace, not enforce

Laura:

peace.

Xhafer:

His speech here.

Xhafer:

He's the captain now, like a hundred percent.

Xhafer:

This speech was the moment where it's all like, this is his station.

Xhafer:

He gets it.

Xhafer:

cause it's exactly that, like you said, it's about building the peace

Xhafer:

and he talks about remembering why we look to the stars in the first place.

Xhafer:

it is very much Sheridan's take of the speech that Sinclair gives.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

In season one about why we go to the stars.

Laura:

Yeah, he's channeling his inner Sinclair here.

Laura:

Um, I really liked when he talked about, you know, Think about your

Laura:

ancestors and your inheritors.

Laura:

Like we've got to be using the work of our ancestors.

Laura:

To build.

Laura:

The future for our inheritors and just don't feel like people think about that

Laura:

enough.

Laura:

My friend.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

I loved that.

Laura:

I loved that.

Laura:

And then we get Cynthia Turkmen signing off.

Laura:

Dateline ISN is over.

Xhafer:

So on a scale Babel on one to five.

Xhafer:

Where you at?

Laura:

This may be a little strong.

Laura:

for me, this is a Babylon five

Laura:

episode.

Xhafer:

It's a great episode.

Xhafer:

No I'm

Xhafer:

with you.

Xhafer:

I wrote down four and a half.

Xhafer:

Just it's a fantastic episode all around.

Xhafer:

Um, it's a such a fun concept.

Laura:

Yeah, it's such an, like a new and interesting.

Laura:

Kind of episode that we hadn't seen.

Laura:

fun premise.

Laura:

You know, the editing is great because we get some of those moments that it's like,

Laura:

somebody just said something, but you can see on their face that that's just.

Laura:

Not, not the reality.

Laura:

there's double As to the things people say there's a sharp

Laura:

juxtaposition of perspectives.

Laura:

And there are some really just memorable, quick vignettes.

Laura:

We got so much

Laura:

in this episode.

Xhafer:

We did, this is, I mean, and when it aired, this was

Xhafer:

something that was unheard of.

Xhafer:

I was reading notes about JMS talking about how he wasn't sure Warner brothers

Xhafer:

was going to approve the script.

Laura:

Wow.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Uh, because it was too much like a new show.

Xhafer:

And not an episode of Babylon five at all.

Xhafer:

And he even, uh, went on records.

Xhafer:

Like I don't know of another scifi show that has done this before.

Xhafer:

I think this is something wholly

Xhafer:

original

Xhafer:

that we're doing.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

great.

Laura:

Definitely not in star Trek.

Laura:

Like, you know, that's the thing we always compare Babel and five to.

Laura:

Right.

Laura:

It's it's so natural since they were on at the same time, but

Laura:

there's no star Trek like this.

Xhafer:

No, I'm sure another scifi show has done it.

Xhafer:

I don't know what offhand.

Xhafer:

Honestly, I think it'd be really interesting to get a star

Xhafer:

wars episode like this at some

Xhafer:

point.

Xhafer:

Um, with all the TV they've been doing lately, it'd be very interesting to see

Xhafer:

like, An Imperial remanent news show.

Xhafer:

Covering what's going on.

Xhafer:

Maybe an and

Xhafer:

or.

Laura:

episode for

Laura:

you?

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

We'll see what happens with and-or.

Xhafer:

That'd probably be the perfect setting for that.

Laura:

Oh,

Laura:

yeah.

Laura:

Good point.

Laura:

Good point.

Xhafer:

But

Laura:

Um,

Xhafer:

it was great.

Xhafer:

Great episode.

Laura:

This is one of my favorites.

Laura:

Just memorable as heck.

Laura:

It builds a lot into it through that framework of new show.

Laura:

And you get so much world built.

Laura:

With more background on Narins.

Laura:

And the, the flavor of the.

Laura:

Cycore and the.

Laura:

sponsorship by interplanetary expeditions, just little pieces.

Laura:

It's just chockfull.

Laura:

I

Laura:

love

Laura:

it.

Xhafer:

And so much of it, like none of it was new.

Xhafer:

Like nothing is introduced in this episode, except for

Xhafer:

Lieutenant Corwin's name.

Xhafer:

you know, it's all callbacks, it's all references.

Xhafer:

I had to have done that much.

Xhafer:

World-building.

Xhafer:

In.

Xhafer:

Under 50 episodes of TV show, whatever episode number this is.

Xhafer:

Yeah, I'd just like to have that much.

Xhafer:

World-building Don already.

Xhafer:

great.

Laura:

Fantastic.

Laura:

Well, what do we have coming

Laura:

up next time?

Xhafer:

Season two episode 15, they're all on her lies.

Xhafer:

Sheridan is charged with murdering a prominent men Bari and the

Xhafer:

Centauri government wants to replace VIR as Alondo as assistant.

Laura:

Oh, no, those are two bad

Laura:

things.

Xhafer:

Yep.

Xhafer:

I remember the veer bit in this episode.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Cause he's very memorable.

Xhafer:

very memorable.

Xhafer:

I'm wondering if I'm kidding.

Xhafer:

The other part, confused with the season one episode with the funeral.

Xhafer:

Or was that even season two?

Xhafer:

Was that early Sheridan with them in Bari?

Xhafer:

Yeah, I think it was.

Laura:

Yeah, there's a lot of like human men Bari tension involving.

Laura:

Attempted murder or actual murder.

Laura:

In the show so far.

Laura:

Well, I'm looking forward to that episode, if nothing else, because

Laura:

we're going to get some quality for

Laura:

your time.

Xhafer:

A hundred percent.

Xhafer:

All right.

Xhafer:

Well, we'll review that episode next week.
